Technically people shoot to "stop." It happens that shooting to stop tends to result in the bad guy dying afterwards. If you are looking into an entry level gun, I suggest something chambered in 22LR. They are inexpensive and won't scare you if you are new to firearms.

The most common one, Glock 17, is in 9mm. Ammo is fairly inexpensive and it doesn't kick too hard, nor is it deafening. Could be a good handgun for you to consider buying.
