It seems that critics HATE this movie

the point he was getting at is that Will Smith has taken on more garbage roles in bad, trashy movies over the last decade that it's difficult to remember a time where Will Smith was one of the most reliable action movie stars out there

I think he was still a positive. It's just that he was Will Smith, and that kind of takes away from the uniqueness of this world for him to be there. I have to imagine that a unique character in his place would have elevated the movie higher.

But it's not like he was horrible. He was still fun and played his feelings towards Jakoby very well.

Maybe it's because I haven't seen much of Will Smith's recent stuff and haven't, I dunno, overdosed on him? but I didn't feel like he detracted from it at all.

Technology is present day rather than slightly futuristic. And there's no matrix (or rather, nothing like that is shown in the movie). Magic is less common since only "Brights" can use it, and they are super rare outside of elves (and they are implied to be fairly uncommon even among elves). So not super Shadowrunny, but undoubtedly the closest we've seen yet in live action.

It's stupid as hell but it was so stupid I kinda liked it-- like the absurdity of some of the stuff that they're playing straight is enough to be entertaining on its own. Not going to wow you with the plot but the world setting is unique enough that it's kinda fun.

I thought he was saying that Will Smith is not a positive part of the movies he is in, whereas I think he's in a lot of bad movies but that he himself is usually decent. For example, Suicide Squad was a better movie for having him in it, even if the movie wasn't too good.

It is not as bad as critics are claiming (worst movie of 2017 is so hyperbolic it's warranted to discount that person entirely) but it's still bad.

This was one of the bits that worked for me because it takes a familiar tropey scene and shows it plays out in this setting. That's how building this kind of "our world but different" setting works, you show what their versions of familiar things look like.

Can't it be both? Like, he's been in bad movies and he hasn't been making them any better. Maybe hasn't been making them worse but he used to be The Guy for fun action movies so that's still a huge decline.

I think the difference is Will Smith used to be in decent movie ideas on paper and he made em pretty good, now he's in really bad movie ideas on paper and can't do enough to salvage em. Would say he's still making em better overall though. Granted like, a movie like Suicide Squad there's only so much he can do as he's part of a huge ensemble cast, but you know.
