It's like someone one day went, "What if I wrote a character who is an asshole transparently trying to use that to cover up how they really feel so they're dumb and pathetic too?" and then everyone else was like, "What if I wrote the exact same character and put it into everything Japanese forever?!?!?" Because it's not a matter of looking at them as just archetypes. Yes, it will affect the first impression of the character and that can make me biased against them. But I won't write them off just from that. Looking at them as individual characters and seeing what they offer to the story rather than what a similar character has done before is the best way to go about it. When it comes to anime, I've seen lots of SoL shows and I've come to have a bias against the glasses girl archetype. I usually associate them with being annoying, the least fun, the most pissy, and only serving as the character that keeps the energetic one in line (usually violently). But there have been plenty of example of characters of the glasses archetype that have proven my biases wrong and were some of the best characters in the show. It made her come off as childish, and I'm all for delving into the intricacies of deep and open ended thought, but I also connected with that opposing outlook since I'm not one who likes being long winded. The archetype I hate, but she's one of the few I tolerated. Plus, I like her brashness. Good reminder that not everyone is gonna be all hugs and kisses to you in real life. It'd be boring otherwise. I like some spice. It's not like she beats the shit out you like I see tsunderes do to protagonists in a lot of anime either. Like, just full stop, that is incredibly off-putting. The fact it's a popular archetype just means that my patience for it has just about evaporated by this point. So I don't really care what backstory led to them being tsundere. Maybe on the inside they're "cute" or something, or troubled. The smart one that the others go to for help, but is usually irritable, not entertaining on her own, and is usually the one that lashes out and keeps the extremely energetic, noisy character on a leash. The character i posted does all of those things. That archetype doesn't always do all of those things in every show they appear in, but they usually have at least half of those traits. And they are usually the worst character in the cast. But not always. Think back to her first writing tip of the day, about not being stuck on trying to make one part perfect because you'll make no progress. That's basically advising you to not try to do whatever you can to keep Sayori alive, because you won't progress as it's not possible. Her poems are expressing what she feels like becoming alive, and she even says it's influenced by an epiphany she had recently, which is true. She doesn't tell you what that is, but it's not a lie.
