mother! was trash imhooooo

I will never, ever argue against this.

I went opening night with absolutely nothing to go on but the trailer. My girlfriend and I left that theater in dead silence, not even sure what to say to each other and being so unbelievably drained. I think mother! is a crazy kind of movie that is only able to get the full effect if you knew absolutely nothing about it.

I never want to see it again. But I would only ever want to see it if I could see it with someone who had never seen it and knew nothing about it. I just want to witness the reaction to this movie as it plays out.

But again, I still don't know if it's good or not yet or if I enjoyed myself watching it.

Aronofsky is better when he doesn't go full religion.

Pi is great, draws on some religious notes. mother! and Noah on the other hand, too far down the rabbit hole.

truth be told, i have to put boston rob as number 35. i can't consider somebody who needs to play 4 times to win as better than someone who wins on their first try.

when i'm ranking winners i tend to divide it, as i order it won on 1st try > won on 2nd try > won on 3rd try > won on 4th try. as much as i dislike mike and ben winning, and aren't a bob fan, i have them higher than anybody that won on their 2nd/3rd/4th tries as at least they did it on their first.

is this because of the advantage of playing before? is natalie a's experience on amazing race considered?

Terror Trailer Thursday (even thought it's Friday for me now)
The weekly update for the latest in horror trailers and news that piques my interest.

I Kill Giants
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7Jg-eo8nBo

This movie is based of the Image Comics series of the same name (which I haven't read). It may pack a few scares, but mostly looks like a more adventure style dark fantasy film. Still, I wanted to feature it here because I think it looks good.

Hereditary
http://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3480180/sundance-film-hereditary-getting-buzz-scariest-horror-movie-years/

This film is getting rave reviews as one of the scariest films ever, coming from a strong pedigree with the A24 production company. Haven't heard of this one before today, and now I want to see it so bad.

The Cured
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSutgzDY_I4

Tired of zombies yet? Well here's another. Honestly, some parts of this look like it could be interesting, other parts look same-old-same-old. Seems like a more serious Warm Bodies.

Summer of '84

Hard to shake that Stranger Things feel, but this is by the director of Turbo Kid so it might be promising.

Not a whole lot, but Days of Future Past was great, Beyond Two Souls was pretty good, and I've heard good things about Tallulah. I was also looking forward to My Days of Mercy which was supposed to premiere this year but not there's no expected release date for it anymore

Accessible like legal, but not having to hunt down a DVD purchase.

Also, just saw The Open House. It is a tremendous you bad Netflix original movie. Like, so bad. So very, very bad. It has possibly the most infuriatingly outrageous scene I have ever seen in a home invasion movie. I'll spoil a bit.

infuriating scene is where the killer somehow pins the main character to the ground and effortlessly takes his contacts out of his eyes in order to make it so he can't see him.

This movie is all red herrings, and that is fine, but they decided to make them all red herrings to reveal that it's actually impossible to figure out who the killer is at all. There is no motivation explained. It's just some fucking dude who kills people who have open houses. It's asinine.

It's also just so god damn mean spirited too. The mom and son in this movie are just two people drawn a shitty card and trying to live and reconcile after the husband/father's death. And then they are tortured and murdered like nothing, which feels like nothing because they didn't write a meaningful climax to their relationship. I really struggle to think of a movie that just makes such horrible decisions with it's story as this.

Literally no indication of who the killer is. And all the red herrings are like, never built upon except one that is such an obvious red herring that there is no shock except to say "I can't believe this dude isn't dead yet." Impressively bad movie.

I watched it too, it's honestly up there as one of the worst ever, like top 5 worst bad. The killer must have had magic teleportation powers if he didn't make one bit of sound with his big heavy boots and never managed to run into either the mother or son despite only having one staircase to go up and down with. The killer takes the kid's contacts out and then the movie doesn't even do a scene where he's stumbling around with blurry vision or anything. Also, right before that, they could've easily escaped in the running car outside but the kid decides to search for a phone instead. And, beyond that, he does manage to find one without a SIM card and doesn't realize you can still dial 911 without one.

Thoughts on The Cloverfield Paradox (very minor spoilers)

https://letterboxd.com/johnbobb/film/the-cloverfield-paradox/

This movie seems to want to do a lot... but never really makes the full effort to do so.

It wants to explain Cloverfield lore, but it doesn't outside from a couple stray lines that don't ACTUALLY give any legitimate explanation.

It wants to be a standalone sci-fi thriller, but it falls into genre tropes never properly explores the actual science (for a better alternate universe experience, check out Coherence).

It want to have an emotional parallel plotlines connecting space and Earth, but relies on flat characters in space and has nothing happen in the Earth story.

It's not the worst sci-fi thriller out there; the performances are decent enough, and it makes cool attempts at concepts like reality warping, but just doesn't have the followthrough.

reposting from the 2018 Video Game Challenge topic because it's relevant here

Johnbobb posted...
2. Beat a game released between 1990-1999
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream

As much as I think remakes are overdone, these type of point-and-click adventure games are exactly the kind of games I'd like to see remade. Remakes are what got me to play Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle, both of which I enjoyed quite a bit.

I'd love to see that with this one. The biggest strengths (the horror, the story structure) would remain, but the issues (arbitrary and exhausting action lists, interactive items blending into the background) could easily be fixed

One of the most frustrating moments was trying to open a locked sarcophagus. When I entered the room, I attempted to "use" it and saw it was locked. After figuring out how to unlock it and exhausting every option multiple times, I finally figured out that the game wouldn't move forward because I hadn't "looked" at it... to see that it was locked, which I had already discovered by using it.

also I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (both the game and the original story) still stands as one of the best horror titles of all time

Terror Trailer Thursdays
The weekly update for the latest in horror trailers and news that piques my interest.

Venom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzxFdtWmjto

Obviously one of the biggest trailers of the week is this Venom teaser, a movie I'm pretty excited for being a fan of Venom and symbiotes in general. It's not a very great or revealing teaser, but it's still fun to get a hint at what's to come.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NooW_RbfdWI

This sequel to the original blockbuster was promised to have more of a horror/thriller feel to it. Judging from the trailer, I do feel that there is some of that in there! The director has the experience for it, if his excellent landmark horror film The Orphanage is anything to go on. Still, I wouldn't expect anything more frightening than something that would maybe a kid up at night to be honest. Some people still consider the original JP a horror film and I think Fallen Kingdom will fall into that pseudo-category as well.

Castle Rock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwmhiqUPa28

We finally got a true look at the upcoming Stephen King universe Hulu exclusive series. I'm sure huge King fans like myself and others will get an absolute kick out of this one.

The First Purge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4mA_fB92GU

Just a quick teaser, no actual film footage. This is a series that definitely saw a nice turnaround after the original sort of flopped in its concept. They're not groundbreaking but they're certainly entertaining and fun.

Saw Winchester.

I don't think I've ever seen a horror movie that I have literally nothing to say about it after. Like absolutely nothing to say about it. Nothing to discuss or anything.

It was an enjoyable enough of a time, but man. It's about as straightforward as it could get and really doesn't have a lot of intrigue to it.

I had a much better time watching Lights Out than Winchester. At the very least you could talk about the interesting things they did with Lights Out, the moment in the movie you feel they messed up with the monster, and a few legitimately good moments, but with Winchester everything has already been done, the plot is so by the books, and nothing is particularly inventive or unique. The one twist they had, I guess I could say I didn't expect it. But then I wasn't really looking for a twist like that and it didn't mean much? I dunno.

With Lights Out I essentially felt nothing afterwards. Like I thought it was just really forgettable. A villain with a whatever gimmick and a vague connection to the protagonist's past. Felt the same way about The Conjuring too.

Yeah I can agree with all that. Between In-shitty-ous and Winchester 2018 has not been great for the horror genre. Nothing new or exciting. I expected much more from the producers of The VVitch as that was easily my favorite horror film of... (oh gosh when did that come out, 2016?) whatever year it was released, but Winchester was just generic schlock. Not bad, but certainly not good. I only give it a four because it had am interesting setting and concept, neither of which were fully utilized imo.
