One of the reasons I don't post on reddit is for fear of being downvoted.

Think of how many down votes there are on Reddit. Why should any one of them affect you any more than any of the others?

idk I engage when users are obviously wrong about something (like this Army recruiter trying to call me out on "making stuff up", and I asked him to explain how anything I said was factually incorrect and he just kept trying to attack me and then said "lol you're hopeless".) (cool story bro). Cases like that, there was no reason to say anything more so I just let it be.

Otherwise it's like w/e, smart people will recognize the worth of my words and dumb people will be dumb. I've only been using the site seriously for the past half a year or so and have a fair amount of karma imo considering I'm not trying to comment whore.

A downvote doesn't mean your comment is wrong. It means that someone else on the internet didn't like what you wrote and they petulantly smashed that dislike button because they felt impotent to do anything else about it.

Think about a climatologist on a flat earth subreddit. They'd be downvoted so hard the mods would delete their shit and ban their account.

The other phenomena I've observed a lot is how comment downvotes/upvotes come in waves of approval. People will be more likely to downvote something that already has 1 or 2 downvotes. Similarly, they'll wait for a further comment from someone else disagreeing before choosing to downvote.

People are bitches who need others to validate their opinions before they fire on them.

That's the reason why you don't take it personally.

I just only post popular opinions there. Posting less popular opinions can get you downvoted extremely quickly. Like saying you wish your sports team lose for a better draft pick. You wait til the season is over to post that.

People Don't like acknowledging that they might be wrong so they hide the post to push their own narrative.

In a thread about abandoware exemptions to DMCA, I posted "If a game was truly abandoned there would be no one to issue the DMCA complaint." And that made some people really mad.

I do take it personally. Especially when I ask a simple, reasonable question or am doing a giveaway. I remember I did a giveaway of PS4 Steins;Gate 0. Bulk of it were upvotes, but still, the downvotes confused me and hurt my feels.

Posts that are factually and demonstrably false (e.g. "Mac is best because it can't get viruses don't get Windoze") or disruptive posts that serve no purpose (e.g. "I would give you gold if I had money").

Sounds to me like the latter usage would have inevitably led to its current application anyway since people who hate your posts would think them useless.

Same. I got so many downvotes on the Build PC subreddit for asking questions. I even have a post from about a year ago that a guy found the other day and managed to berate me for asking a question. FROM A YEAR AGO.

In my experience PC nerds are insufferable.

Like I feel like the purveying philosophy on overclocking is "if you have to ask questions about it, you shouldn't be doing it." Like...fuck that.

I don't understand that logic. Asking questions about an unknown subject is good, it means we're trying to learn what the hell we're doing so we can do it right. ;_;

Generally true but with overclocking, which can burn your motherboard if done wrong, its almost one of those things where "When the time comes, you'll know." What I mean to say is; if you're playing a game you need to overclock for: then you're already a techie who knows what they are doing. OCing is not for the masses, its dangerous and unnecessary.

I'll be perfectly honest, I misuse the Downvote, Save and Hide buttons on reddit threads on purpose, so if I downvote something, there's a reason for it. Usually if I don't like a post I'll just move past it, not downvote it.
