I actually just got gifted this from that Steam gifting topic. It's just about finished downloading.

I'd be interested in tips/tricks myself. Also if anybody's got any mods they'd suggest.

If you invest 8 or 9 points in luck, you can find clothing/buy an implant that further buffs your luck to 10. With that, you can clear out all of the casinos in the game, giving you a generous nest egg to keep your character self sufficient through the whole game.

Careful though, the game intends for you to loop around New Vegas from your starting position, following the main story around. There are some deliberately tough enemy encounters placed to try and prevent you from heading there directly.

First tip, ignore this clown.

Maxing Luck will pay off once you get to Vegas as others said. Investing in speech skills can make your life easier in a lot of situations. Dialogue is important in this game sometimes allowing you to avoid conflicts entirely (or spark them if you wish).

If you have the pre-order packs the Caravan Shotgun is a good weapon. Don't venture too far afield around Goodsprings. There are very dangerous creatures that will one shot you in a few areas.

There's a safe in Primm (second town you'll likely go to) with a 75 lockpick skill check. It has a decent pistol in it if you can buff your lockpick stat up high enough.

Once you complete the "main" sidequest at Primm, it will open up the casino there. With 9 points in Luck, you will break the bank, and walk out with plenty of money.

Go into the bar and you'll meet a lady with a dog (forgot her name). She teaches you how to shoot, but you also get a free Varmint Rifle which is useful for early long range shooting.

If you go north a bit, you should find a graveyard area. If you get the shovel then you can dig up the graves for some loot. This is also the area where Benny shot you in the intro.

You're encouraged to head south, as up north is filled with Cazadors and Deathclaws. Cazadors are a nightmare to fight early on and are very dangerous.
