Would you support a "religious freedom" law?

Former Christian Oregon Bakers, Aaron and Melissa Klein will continue collecting cans to make money as a court upheld a penalty against them 5 years ago when they broke the law and refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple!!

Their bakery, Sweet Cakes, which is more like Sour Cakes was closed after the couple were ordered to pay 135,000 to lesbian couple, Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer after they refused to bake them a cake and the couple tried to counter that stating the Labour Commissioner, Brad Avakian violated state and federal laws by forcing them to pay in emotional-distress damages.

They said it violated their rights as artists to free speech and religious freedom

But the Oregon Court of Appeals upheld the law stating the Kleins failed to show the state targeted them for their religious beliefs

Brad Avakian said "Today's ruling sends a strong signal that Oregon remains open to all"

This comes as the US Supreme Court is hearing a high profile case im Colorado when a baker refused to make a cake for a same sex couple. Jack Phillips says his 1st amendment claims of artistic freedom are violated, similar to what's happening to the ignorant Kleins

The court said "Although we accept that the Kleins imbue each wedding ake with their own aesthetic choices, they have made no showing that other people will necessarily experience any wedding cake that the Kleins createe predominatly as 'expression' rather than as food"

Kelly Shackelford from the First Liberty institute disagreed and said the Kleins were not entitled tot he Constitution's promises of religious liberty and free speech

A 2007 Oregon law protects the rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people in employment, housing and public accomodations and private businesses are not allowed to discriminate based on sexual orientation.

It happened in 2013 when the lesbian couple wanted to order a cake and Aaron had asked them whom the groom was and when they said there wasn't one, he said he could not bake a cake for them because of GOD and then quoted LEVITICUS "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is abomination"

The Kleins received almost half a million in donations and hope that President Trump makes it legal to have religious freedom in their businesses as they appeared alongside Republican politicians to push their agenda.

Would you support a "religious freedom" law?

Private businesses should have the right to refuse whoever they want, and deal with the public outcry/backlash.

If someone wants to refuse service to gays, people of color, white people, straight people, non trans, christians, or whatever, then they should have that right if its their own private business. They would then have to deal with the consequences of said exclusion and probably go out of business, which is completely fine by me, but they shouldnt have to be forced to serve someone.

usually im against Trump's side, but things like this is why Trump won.

as for myself, i think both side has their fault. the baker should have bake the cake, but allowed to refuse to decorate it with items that's against their policy. and the customer has the right to decorate it into anything after the item was out of the shop, but cant force the baker to do things that they dont want to.

Bug businesses wont dare discriminate against anyone for a multitude of reasons

1: theyre big BECAUSE they dont discriminate. Money is money to them no matter who or what it comes from. They love the color of money above anything else, which is why they wouldnt dare turn anyone away

2: big businesses have to answer to shareholders, which beings me back to my first point. Shareholders would never stand for a policy that would bring in less money, especially considering most of those shareholders are from every ethnic and religious background you can be.

Big businesses would never in a million years do it for those two simple reasons alone. This arguement is more in line with private businesses. Big publically traded businesses would absolutely kill themselves if they adopted anykind of exclusive policy.

Imagine if wal mart came out tomorrow and banned black people from their stores. Their stocks would absolutely TANK and their shareholders would absolutely fire bomb any executive who made that decision. It would never happen.

Private businesses though? Yes, they should have that option

Must suck when the shoe is on the other foot. The irony of people who discriminate against someone because of beliefs is whining about being discriminated against.

It doesn't work both ways. You cant be a bigot against a group of people and cry foul when people uphold the law against discriminating against a group of people.

Those were the ones that went as far as doxxing and encouraging harassment of the couple that they refused business with, so it is totally fair for them to be fined that much, and I generally support small business owners being able to follow their own religious beliefs over being forced to support same-sex wedding ceremonies if they sincerely believe that their religion prohibits it.

The market can't decide things like this. You need policy. While I do think the fine is too harsh, they did discriminate and are clearly in the wrong here. Business shouldn't decide who to sell to (there are exceptions, but that more in the realm of bad previous experiences with said customer, like not paying their bills). What they can do is determine what they sell. That couple could've just said they can't put the wedding couple's names on the cake due to their religious beliefs (I mean, I wouldn't sell a cake with a swahstika on it), but they could've offered to sell them a textless wedding cake.
