Current Events > Bout to play Resident Evil for the first time (Spoilers as I go)

Just bought the remake on XBOX One, I've never played a Resident Evil game before, figured I'd start with the first one.

I know literally nothing about the series, so I'm going in completely blind.

Without giving away too much, are they any long term effects from me choosing Jill or Chris at the start?

Is there a melee option I'm missing? Cause it was a pretty funky angle to shoot the monster in that tiny ass first room.

I've actually seen the argument that Chris is easier (or at least more equal than people think) because he has a lighter, runs faster, can take more damage, and crits more.

You will want to avoid enemies as much as possible (not kill them). Super minor, non-story spoiler:

In the remake, zombies also start reanimating (a cutscene warns you when this kicks in) and will need to be burned. When you do choose to kill them, try to down them in the same spot so you only need to waste one burn. They are pretty limited.

Wait, was I like, not supposed to kill that first zombie? I took the time to kill it, then in the next cut scene my buddy ended up killing it.

Was that the reanimation you were talking about, or was I just not expected to kill that zombie?

They just gave me a dagger at first, and I assumed it'd give me a longer amount of time to get away or knock the monster down or something when I used it, and it didn't, I should have ran immediately after using it.

Damn I get startled too easy.

Was up on the second floor where you had to push the statue off and down into the room below, and I heard the Zombie groaning while I was exploring but didn't see him anywhere, then when I go to the other side of the statue to push it, the camera shifts and there he is, right up my ass. Got my first jump of the game out of me.

Gotta love fixed cameras. In all honesty, they work really well for horror games.

I stupidly just assumed that I could save at the typewriter whenever, and now I might be fucked.

Yeah I think I'm gonna call it for tonight, and start from scratch tomorrow. Should be able to catch back up pretty quick since I understand the mechanics a lot better now, and only got around an hour in anyways.

If you're playing on normal, ink ribbons shouldn't be a major issue unless you try to use them like quicksaves or something. For one thing, I believe you find more in every single save room.

I mean, I burned the 3 I got early on in the first 20 minutes like a dumbass. >_>

In most games I save as much as possible, like, literally anytime I do anything of even minor significance. It appears I cant do that with that game, so my normal play-style hardcore worked against me this time.

yeah i wouldn't be saving every second. it might be difficult because this game can be brutal and daunting at times, but id save it for when you do something of note. get a new weapon, solve a puzzle, find a key ect. you dont need to be uber stringent with them though, there is quite a lot of them on normal to the point where you can save every 10 minutes or so assuming thats all progress.

also pay attention to your map. rooms that are in tan/brown have items in them. those in green are rooms that youve cleared of items. this makes it very difficult to miss stuff.

Keep in mind that one of the unlockables for this game require that you complete it under three hours. Old-style REs are a lot more exploration and puzzle-based, so you don't lose much progress by dying because you've figured out what to do and can get back to that point very quickly.

I'd rather it just take a second like Silent Hill or whatever, with the door animation it's "HEY LOOK WE'RE LOADING!"

Welp, after using the arrowhead and getting the book of curses again, pretty sure I'm already caught up to where I was last night. >_>

I did what I did in an hour in less than 20 minutes. :/

Now to try and figure out what to do next.

Found the mansion key on the back of the book of curses, I'm guessing I use it in that death puzzle to get that other key? Unless I actually need this key for something, guess we'll find out.

Edit: Oh, never mind, immediately used it on that locked door in the room with the statue.

gl on playthrough, the remake added some nice features in it, i'm sure you'll enjoy them soon ;)

So I found this outdoor area, and it had a plant chemical and a bunch of other shit. I used up the herb I was keeping on hand to pick up the chemical cause I assumed I had to use it on the overgrown cart, but nothing happened so I guess I'm just stuck with this for now. >_>

Oh shit, so, I found a fucking shotgun, but A) I didn't pick up the shotgun shells earlier cause space, and B) I have no space in my inventory right now, and short of wasting 8 bullets so I can put my other clip in my gun (which I might do >_>) there's no way for me to pick up this shotgun. :(

Item boxes can be found where save points are. You can store items in them and take them out at different locations.

How that works? I dunno.
