Pre-show: Steamboat d. Fuji (58)

The ring is decked out with an odd set. Jake Roberts comes out and welcomes us to the VIPER'S DEN. His guest tonight is Jerry Lawler! Lawler thinks King's Court is a way better segment, and Jake responds by trolling until a fight breaks out. (70) After commercial, Tully beats Michaels. (77) Hennig is in the locker room waiting for Windham to change for his match. Baba and Tsuruta jump Hennig and beat the stuffing out of him before Windham can get there! (38)

Faces of Fear finally convince Style and Substance to back up their claims and defend the titles. (58) Sheik and Koloff are going to win the Rumble because the Americans are dumb and easily outsmarted. (47) Bruno beats Reed, with DVE once again taunting Bruno on color. (65) This time, Bruno goes after DVE after the match! After some back and forth, DVE takes a big slam on the outside. (81)

Windham is flying solo after the attack on Hennig, but still manages to beat Tenryu. (60) All Japan aren't done yet, though! Hansen himself comes out with AKIO, and they put the boots to the kid. (51) Flair and Duggan easily beat Luis Edwards and Dave Taylor, despite some tension over the upcoming Rumble. (69) La Parka is still dancing after being paid to do so last week! He sucks Snuka and Jones into a dance party. (49)

Terry and Dory Funk team up against Money and Power, but come up a bit short. (81) Hogan shows us some weightlifting and demonstrates how it will enable him to throw people over the top. (91) Muraco and Ventura have a grudge match for the main event, and it ain't pretty. Ventura gets a big win. (72)

Wk. 3, 1/85

Pre-show: Martel d. Strongbow (58)

Lawler is out, sans King's Court set. He calls Jake out and taunts him. Jake is about to administer a DDT when Lawler happens to mention he has backup! Bruno comes out, flanking Jake. Things look grim for the IC Champ, but DVE comes out to even the odds. Tag match set for main event. (70) Hansen faces the Harts again, but this time Tenryu has come along to make it a regular tag match. Hansen's cocky, and almost loses the match as a result, but All Japan prevails nonetheless. (76) Immediately afterwards, we see Future Perfect backstage. Hennig's banged up pretty badly. Windham's not feeling a whole lot better, but he formally challenges Hansen to a title match to settle things! (61)

Sheik decides Michaels is in his way backstage. Sheik tells the American pigdog to move, but Michaels ain't havin' it! Sheik slaps the kid, but stalks off after Michaels holds his ground. (45) La Parka dances his way out to the ring, then jobs to Ventura. (68) The Funks bring up their Texan roots, and compare the Rumble to wrangling cattle back home. (82) Meng beats Schultz. Statement made! (61)

Tully is just gonna dominate one guy tonight, but at the Rumble he's gonna destroy 29! (92) True to his word, Tully gets a quick win over Garea. (72) Muraco regrets losing to Ventura last night, but it's forced him to refocus on the Rumble. (89) Money and Power and Death defeat Steamboat and Snuka and Jones. (87) Money might not be that applicable to the Rumble, but they'll bring enough Power and Death for 27 other guys! AHAHAHAHA. (68) Duggan and Flair are again experiencing tension over the Rumble. Hogan tries to get them all on the same page, since they all love AMERICA, but they just verbally unite against him. (86) As established in the opening segment, DVE and Jake team up against Bruno and Lawler in a pretty decent main event. DVE gets the claw on Lawler for the win. (79)

Windham is out by himself. He calls out Hansen, challenging him to be a man and also come out alone. Windham warns Hansen not to underestimate him. Hansen gives him a shove, and Windham comes back with a slap! Hansen chuckles and leaves. (78) The Funks beat Baba and Tsuruta. (82) HBK jumps Sheik after their showdown last week! They brawl a bit. (37) Razor thinks he's gonna win the Rumble. The Harts disagree. (48)

Martel and Barbarian have a good match, with Martel going over. (74) Jesse's gonna beat the Rumble, but first he has to beat this guy! (92) And he does indeed beat Jack Brisco. (77) Parka convinces Hogan to dance with him. (58) Jake informs us that Lawler isn't here tonight. Jake doesn't think kindly of folks who want titles who aren't even around. (66)

Tully beats Steamboat in a quality match. (82) Flair is kinda tired of talking about Duggan. Duggan's a good guy, and Flair enjoyed winning the tag league with him, but he's all about the Rumble right now, and it's every man for himself! (92) Bruno joins us on commentary for the main event: DVE and Duggan against Money and Power! Bruno runs down DVE the whole time, but then goes one step further and cheap shots him from the ring apron! This leads directly into a DiBiase win. (96) DVE questions Bruno's manhood, but Bruno is quite capable of beating him in a fair fight, too! (74)

Ventura regales us with a song about how he's gonna rock everybody's world at the Rumble! (85) Title pictures collide as Hansen and Bruno take on the Faces of Fear! FoF's tag experience keeps them in the match for a solid showing, but Style and Substance run interference, allowing Bruno to get the win. (66) Razor talks about how he's gonna sit back and let the other 29 guys do the work for him. Steamboat says that's not the path of a warrior. (50) Tully beats La Parka. (70)

Future Perfect are out to the ring. Hennig's still not 100%, but he's gonna be able to compete in the Rumble! And Windham's gonna beat Hansen for him. The future of Wrestlemania is...perfect! [Tag partners colliding for the belt at Mania? Pssh that'd never happen.] (57) Tonight, Windham and DVE are teaming up in a non-title match against Style and Substance. The tag champs fare better than their challengers, successfully taking out DVE on the outside and isolating Windham for a huge win! (74) A rough night for the faces gets worse when Sammartino comes out and slams DVE into the ringside floor! (87) The Funks beat All Japan last night, and All Japan had best pray they get stuck in traffic this weekend! Terry knows All Japan, and knows how to beat them with Dory at his side. They're gonna beat All Japan at the Rumble, and then if Hansen survives that long, they're gonna beat him for the belt! (70)

Duggan and Sheik put on a surprisingly sound match.....Sheik pins Duggan in the middle of the ring! (81) Shawn Michaels comes out and tells Sheik to watch his back in the Rumble, because Michaels is gonna break his heart! (45) We see a montage of Hogan schmoozing with fans and press. HULKAMANIA or something. (83) Our main event is the battle of smark favorites Ric Flair and Eddie Williams! Flair gets the win off botched DiBiase interference. (79) Jake is out to talk about facing Lawler...when Lawler jumps him from behind and beats him down! (59)

WWF Presents ROYAL RUMBLE
Friday, Week 4, January 1985

Pre-show: S. Williams d. Rotundo (60)

Tonight 30 men are gonna compete in a grueling test of endurance, but only one man can come out on top. The Nature Boy is gonna show you ONE of the reasons they call him the 60 minute man! (92) Roberts is selling Lawler's attack from last night. Lawler says that's what happens when you cross the King, and now Roberts is going to lose that IC Title! (70) ...Turns out there was an element of playing possum in that sell, as Roberts takes some lumps and then turns the tables on Lawler to retain! (79) Koloff is complaining that he wasn't picked for the Rumble. Reed tells him to stop whining. (35)

Heenan hypes up his boys Style and Substance,(62) but they are defeated by Faces of Fear for the tag titles! (79) Tully Blanchard warms up for the Rumble by beating up Jack Brisco. (68)

Hansen offers Windham the chance to back down now and save himself some humiliation and a beating. Windham slaps the champ! (77) Wild brawl between the two, but the big man comes out on top to retain. (89) Michaels and Sheik continue their mini-feud on the mic. (51)

It's Bruno Sammartino and David Von Erich for DVE's NWA Title! DVE is still feeling that slam onto the concrete a bit, but battles on anyway. The wear starts to show on him, though, and he slows down enough for Bruno to start catching him with some power offense. Sammartino pins DVE in the middle of the ring, winning the NWA Title! (74) He is glad to be back at the top where he belongs. The second age of Sammartino has just begun! (66)

I will need another post or three for the Rumble itself, and might not be able to finish it tonight, but it scored (81). The winner celebrates! (91)

It's down to Flair and Ventura! They go back and forth for a while....but Flair is showing the effects of entering #1....Ventura throws him out!
