I plan on giving the demo a whirl this weekend. I have no idea what to expect because I've never played a Monster Hunter game and know little about them. The concept sounds fun, though.

I played the easy mission. I didn't really understand what I was doing and the combat felt very clunky. I'm sure most of this is due to it being my first experience with the game and series in general, but is the combat system deeper than what it appeared to be to a novice such as myself?

In the upper-right corner you can always see what your combat options are at any given time, including mid-combo. Some weapons are fairly simplistic (Great Sword, Hammer), others far more complicated (Switch Axe, Hunting Horn, Charge Blade). For a start I would recommend Hammer, Long Sword, or Dual Swords. Great Sword is simple to learn but actually difficult to use effectively since it's so timing-dependent.

Go into the training mode and you should be able to mess around with the combat in a more controlled environment. Probably in the menus somewhere you can look at all the different moves available to you as well, that's how it's always been in the past.

Beat the Easy and Intermediate stages. I haven't gotten the hang of combat yet and healing yourself feels so slow compared to other games. I found the expert level monster and felt like I was doing decent against it, but it kept "eating" me and I ran out of time after dying twice. I was using a bow so maybe I'll try the hammer next.

I'm so bad at this. I can't figure out when to heal because you have to put away your weapon first and then if you try to evade or anything while healing it doesn't heal the full amount. This Diablos thing keeps 2-hit KOing me. If he knocks me down once I get hit a second time and die before I even get up. Everything feels so slow aside from the huge monsters who all seem to move really fast and have giant range on their attacks. I'm trying over and over to get the hang of it, but not much luck so far.

finding the right time to heal is one of those things you learn with time (wouldnt advise trying to learn it against diablos because FUCK that guy). the being able to move while healing is new and i didnt have to when i was playing so cant really comment on it now

for weapons the sword and shield lets you use items while the weapon is out so you might want to give it a shot. the long sword is what im seeing be recommended as a beginning weapon so maybe that also

Heres a good beginner tip: If youre sprinting away from a monster (with your weapon sheathed) and dodge in the direction youre running, youll do a Superman dive that has a ton of invincibility frames. Getting back up is slow, but if you use the dive properly youll at least avoid the biggest, most telegraphed attacks.

Dont forget about traps and items in your inventory, a successful paralysis is a big opportunity for damage and poison does a fair amount of damage, especially if you manage to poison them twice in one hunt.

And I would definitely avoid Diablos until youve hunted every other monster in the demo, its tougher than all the rest.

I've hunted the main 3 and I think there are only like 2-3 others aside from them with one being Diablos.
I haven't found any of the rest and honestly even killing one big monster takes up almost all of the time you're given. I can't seem to figure out how to mount enemies. I did it once by complete accident and kept trying to get higher ground to jump on enemies and it wasn't quite working. The giant horn support weapon that looks like a big spiked club through me off, but I somehow didn't need to heal and didn't die while using it during the Intermediate boss. Tried to kill this big swimming monster, but it ran away and everybody focused on the boss instead

So the best way to understand mounting is to think of it almost like a status effect. Any attack you do while jumping inflicts mounting damage. The monster has what you could call a mounting damage threshold and once you've done enough mounting damage to hit that threshold you will successfully mount the monster. Afterwards their mounting damage goes back down to zero, and their threshold for the next mount increases so it will take more jumping attacks to be able to do it again.

As I mentioned this is almost identical to how status effects work against monsters in this game too. The only difference there is that accumulated status damage slowly goes away on its own. So for example, say a monster needed 500 poison damage to actually become poisoned. You couldn't deal 499, wait ten minutes, and then deal 1 more and get them poisoned, because a lot of that status damage would have been healed. But mounting damage doesn't work this way, it remains accumulated regardless.

I can't even figure out how to jump aside from when I'm on an edge and it just auto jumps when I run off. There doesn't seem to be an actual jump button. I found a Rathalos and broke its tail. I ran out of time before I could kill it though.

There is no jump button.

Overall I am not very happy with this. The core combat is the same as always, sure, but the game is full of so many bad decisions and programming that it just frustrates me. Oh well.

I really don't like how items work in this. In single player at least it seems hard to even use any of them during battle. If I get poisoned by an enemy by the time I switch to an Antidote, equip it and use it I'm being hit by an enemy again.and then my health is pretty low so I have to scroll back over to a potion, equip that and use it. I'd be happier if they could be mapped to a button, but I'm not sure they can.

You have to learn to time things with enemy movement. You cant just sheath and drink a potion without paying attention to what the monster is doing. Sheath, put distance between you and the monster, wait for it to launch an attack that you know you are out of range of and drink the potion while it's locked into the attack animation. Keep moving while doing so, and remember you can sprint while drinking

Also you need to make sure you're safe to sheath first as that animation also leaves you vulnerable. The whole game is about paying attention to what the monster is doing. Watch their movements. Learn their attacks. Learn their range.

I don't seem to have any time though. I can evade an attack from an enemy and even if they're like 30 feet away from me after it they're already heading at me with another attack before the potion even fully heals me because the HP recovery is slow. I feel like you almost need another player so it can distract the enemy giving you time to heal because this little cat doesn't really seem to be much use lol

Damn lost track of the Rathalos this time and just couldn't find it again at all. I suppose it doesn't matter since I died a couple times that go anyways. Several times I've been hit to the floor and attacked a second time before my character can get up or I'll get up, but be dizzy and get hit a second time before I recover. I hate status effects the most though. I rolled around like 4 times before this fire went out and it sapped my HP so quickly I died to a single hit after before I could even attempt to flee to recover any health. This game is brutal lol

Yeah there's no jump button, for most weapons the only jumping attacks you can do are when you jump off a ledge. Insect Glaive has an easy vaulting command that makes you airborne which IG users use fairly often, and there is a technique for Lance that vaults you into the air but it has far more limited use.

In multiplayer getting hit by some allied attacks will launch you into the air and you can score a mount then, too.

My verdict: combat is great as always. New stuff is very hit or miss. Forest map is awful, scout flies don't work very well, especially in the forest. Rathalos is annoying as shit. Always in the air and runs away constantly. Fighting him in the 20 minute limit is a battle of navigating the convoluted map more than it is actually hunting rathalos.

Mantles are okay but take too long to charge. Slinger is interesting, i didn't bother with gathering stuff to shoot out of it so i didn't use it much other than the knives you start with and the flash bombs you can get for rathalos.

The forest has really bad framerate on the regular ps4. The desert Is fine. Diablos is okay. Barroth and anjanath are fun, jagras is a punching bag. Jyuratodos is mediocre. Didn't get pukei to spawn.

Charge blade will be one of, if not the strongest weapon. Hbg is really strong too. Pierce isn't quite as good it seems, spread is way stronger and doesn't trip your team like it used to. Slicing shot is probably the strongest ammo type and it has very little recoil, but it knocks your team around. Both special shot types are good. The shield is surprisingly useful

Bow is apparently super strong too, if you can land dragon piercer constantly

Well, if it was that alone no it wouldn't. Historically it had bad motion values. But spread 3 is almost definitely stronger than pierce 3 now, seemingly by a lot. Slicing is more or less as strong as spread but with less recoil

I think IG needs to be mid tier to keep it balance, it's too versatile to give it too much power, the aerials and range + buff combinations are already fantastic. Just my opinion on it though.
