1. 500 million gamers have played Candy Crush
2. Revolutionized microtransactions with the most famous viral loop in gaming as well as paving the way for a focus on user pathway analytics.
3. King's game design philosophy for Candy Crush revolved around developing habits and making parallels to the addictive nature of slot machines.

I can't think of any game that comes close to these 3 accomplishments.

Pretty sure video slots/poker came before candy crush. And they dwarf those numbers.

One of the lead devs of CC actually develops RNG for Vegas machines.

They're 100% related.

Designing a video game to create mental addictions had never been done at scale before.

This was done by Farmville. King just copied them.

Farmville had very poor use of user pathway analytics.

Nah, the core Viral loop, spam facebook friends, get them to play, grant referral bonuses, make those people spam facebook friends, etc, was all started by Farmville.

Candy Crush made better use of pathway analytics because their game was better suited to use it as a pick towards gambling habits, but most games haven't copied that part of Candy Crush. 99% of them just use the Farmville facebook spam loop.

You're kind of contradicting yourself.

CC's use of user pathways allowed much higher conversion rates and LTV per user. The FB invites are set up much more intelligently, paving the way for high grossing IAP notification structure. Great example would be the jump from CC to PAD in terms of strategy.

Farmville was the first but it was a very unrefined methodology.

What were the addiction mechanics??

The unlock system with XP, attachments and perks, challenges, and prestige mode. All designed (addiction unintentional) to keep you playing and working towards things at a steady rate, to the point that it overshadows the underlying gameplay.

Granted it was something RPGs had done for decades but it was never applied in such a streamlined and accessible way.

And keep in mind that it pales in comparison to the addiction mechanics of today so it doesn't seem like much.

At its core, progression is heavily RNG based but balanced so that user retention doesn't drop off. The average user will win just barely enough to stay playing.

Playing some mobile phone shit doesn't make one a "gamer," the original connotation of the word implies that someone is deeply invested in videogaming. Calling people who only play games like candy crush "gamers" is ridiculous. It's like saying everyone that sees a shitty summer comedy at the movies once a year is a movie buff. The word 'gamer' has been co-opted often to essentially lie about and obfuscate the actual makeup of the gaming community.

Granted, I fucking hate the word "gamer" due to its other cultural connotation and would never use it to self-identify, but regardless when people use it in such a broad way that they define people who own no console or PC set up who happen to play Candy Crush or Facebook mini games as "gamers" it just gets me. It's a pet peeve.

The impact of Candy Crush's approach to microtransactions + user pathway analytics = incredibly influential

Name one game that has changed the industry more.
