One thing relevant for the time period that GameCube didn't have that the other two consoles did was the ability to play DVDs. That's not the entire reason, but it played a fairly big part in some people's decision.

Gamecube did not have more smash hits than Xbox and PS2 combined. Technically Xbox was the most powerhouse of the generation and PS2 had the most stellar titles of the generation with Xbox following 2nd.

The PS2 was the undisputed king but nobody overlooks the GameCube.

Playstation and Xbox had a large quantity of a mature content games (guns, blood, gore, sex, etc).

GameCube originally only had a trickle of them...because Nintendo kept the kiddy gloves on too long, yet again.

PS2 had singstar and was a cheap DVD player.

Less third party support (especially the big blockbuster games of the time like Grand Theft Auto), poor marketing (this was the height of Nintendo = Kiddy and they released a console with a handle that made it look like a lunchbox), bad design choices (not paying for DVD playback at a time when it *was* still important for people, using propriety disc format with smaller capacity).

Still, it's got a hell of a library of classics, I never regretted mine - but it had no chance to compete.

N64 got *stomped* in sales by the PS1. Not even a contest. PS1 was a whole new revolution in opening up the gaming market to adults the way Sony promoted it.

like most Nintendo consoles, it's mainly for the hardcore fanboys and nostalgia people. People remember like 3/4 games that were on N64, goes for gamecube too, meanwhile you can list off memorable games that were on PS1/PS2

Nintendo didn't embrace online gaming on the GameCube like Microsoft and Sony did for their consoles. Online multi-player wasn't as common then as it is now, but I remember Nintendo getting a lot shit for it in various gaming magazines. It just put a limit on what kind of stuff could be done on the GameCube that its competitors didn't have.

Coolest looking console by far, but compared to its competitors it had a terrible controller, couldn't play dvds and had no online support.

However, it gave us Luigis Mansion so I love it.

You also had all the classic Resident Evil games (1-3, Code Veronica / X and of course the brilliant REmake) plus 4.

In terms of RPGs, there was Tales of Symphonia. I hear the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games were pretty fun too.

The multiplat selection was way ahead of the N64's. To add to what was already listed, there was Hitman 2, Splinter Cell, Burnout, TimeSplitters 2 and 3, Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2, Second Sight, Killer7, Beyond Good & Evil, etc.

Those stupid tiny disks instead of using regular disks like PS2 and Xbox.

That cost them a lot of third-party support.

It didn't have DVD player and looked like a lunch box. That is really some of the reasons people didn't pick it up.

Biggest thing was that the PS2 kept the success of the PS1 and could play DVDs. N64 was the king of multiplayer, and it's games aged fine for a long time, so people didn't need to upgrade.

There were also the Xbox fans, edgy 12 year olds that thought playing Halo made them mature because of swearing.

The GameCube is a amazing console. It houses most of my favorite games, and was the last hurrah for traditional consoles.

I'm actually surprised to see that the Xbox outsold it by a couple million. It doesn't have the library the GameCube does, but it was the king of multi-plats.

I feel like the original Xbox was what was overlooked. People remember it for Halo and Halo 2 of course, and some may remember it for Fable and Morrowind, but other than that it was entirely overshadowed by the PS2. GameCube had a similar situation but it stuck out by simply being a Nintendo console and all the caveats that brings.

- PS2 launched 1 year and a half before the gamecube
- PS2 was basically the cheapest DVD player on the market
- PS2 was ridiculously easy to pirate
- PS2 had a lot more third party developers
- PS2 was backward compatible
- PS1 was wildly successful
- Gamecube had proprietary mini discs which held less data and were more expensive

I loved the gamecube, and whenever I was getting a new game and had a choice between getting the ps2 or gamecube version, I'd always get the gamecube version.

I think the biggest reason it got overlooked was because the ps2 came out a year before the gamecube and xbox, and then when it was released, it got overshadowed by the xbox. I'm not sure why, but I'd guess Microsoft threw a bunch of money into advertising it. I honestly can't think of any hits from the original xbox aside from Halo.

Fable was the other big exclusive. There were plenty of others but they were generational one-offs.

The games like Morrowind and Counter Strike that would have otherwise stayed PC exclusive are still important to note, especially when computers weren't as common and the Xbox was a mid-range PC sold at a loss.
