I feel bad for those who would prefer not to work on any holiday but have to for financial reasons or for the sake of their employment. I know a good number of people who don't mind working any day regardless just because it will advance them financially. Personally, I've always been the type to prefer my free time, but for those who have to work on days when they'd prefer to be with their family, yeah I feel bad for them.

Yeah, absolutely. I'm lucky enough to work food service but still get off Christmas and Thanksgiving (those are my only two guaranteed days a year though).

I'll still go out shopping Thanksgiving evening though, because I have to open the store every Black Friday.

Even before black friday creep, people who work for restaurants, movie theaters, hospitals, TV stations, Law enforcement, DoD, EMTs/firefighters, and so on have worked on Thanksgiving.

To be fair, for a lot of those jobs its just a normal day, work-wise. For retail, its a major uptick in work and the pay is likely a lot worse

I'd guess I'd feel bad for the person if the person didn't want to do it and was being taken away from family events and stuff. Maybe taken away from an especially rare occasion like family coming down or something

but I guess thats such a very specific group of people that I can't say I feel sorry for workers as a whole

some people know what they're doing and some don't care overall

its not as simple as TC makes it

Solidarity, man. I worked at a fancy place in California that provided full turkey dinners from 11am to 9pm and we didn't even get holiday pay.
Edit: I was also a line cook. Suuuucks a lot.

Yes. I feel sorry for anyone who has to work at a place that has no need to be open. I remember having to work Thanksgivings when I was in high school/first few years of college. I didn't mind too much, because I didn't really have anywhere else to be. And the tips were usually pretty good. But it still sucked pretty hard.

I still feel sorry for people in emergency services, but those are necessary. So it's less needless.

I don't mind really. I make an excellent amount of tips so it ends up being worth it.

I just am like, with all this recent sympathy gushing out for retail workers I want to be like "BUT YA'LL DIDN'T CARE THAT WE WERE OUT HERE FOR THE PAST DECADE SERVING FOOD SMH"

As if it's an emergency if you don't get your cheap flatscreen TV.

Of course, that DOES explain all the fights on Black Friday...

I know someone who works at a Macy's. Thanksgiving carries a mandatory shift until 2:30am and you're fired on the spot if you're not there for the entire shift.

Never done anything black Friday related before but I'll probably head in just to pick her up. 2:30am is insane.

Waiting and cooking are apples and oranges for stress. It's stupid to compare. There's different things that makes both of them rough, especially on days regular people have off.
I was told explicitly that if any kitchen staff didn't show up that day, they'd be fired. Food service is ruthless.
