Looking out the window at work, and the city workers are painting the bike lane green on the road in front of my building. I didn't know that was an "official" color for it.

Green chevrons seems to be the style theyre being done in these days, although I have no idea if its being mandated to be so...

They're just meant to be distinctive so you don't stray.

Depends what colour your municipality decides they should be. I have heard of them being painted to be more visually distinctive, and I've also seen plenty that are just a line on the road.
