In general, I think the possibility of a coup is damn near zero. That said, there is evidence of military leaders ignoring Trump's orders, which isn't a coup, but is a dangerous precedent. While the ability to refuse unlawful orders exists, I would not be surprised if there is an explicit list of what constitutes an unlawful order if that order is from the President. Don't get me wrong, I am happy that some of his orders are being ignored, it lessens the bad he can do, but that doesn't make them doing that 'right". The issue with the precedent it sets is that they are ignoring orders that aren't tactically important in the grand scheme of things. What is to stop them from ignoring an order that actually matters tactically? From Trump or even a future president? The one comfort here is that I trust the military leaders to actually act in the best interest of the country when compared to Trump, but that is a very fragile comfort.

I basically feel the same way. But i worry a lot.

Theres a long standing historical military tradition of saying like "Im not disobeying BUT these orders are crap and I want you to revisit the logic behind them before i execute them"

I dont know for certain that its still around but my understanding is that being a general or colonel or whatever that high up carried with it the ability to legally mold policy even in spite of orders. Its the very logic that was used in Nuremburg for instance, that a General or other officer has a moral obligation to raise objections to bad orders.

Listening to an interview with someone researching Pence, it sounds like he had a super abusive childhood.

I want to sympathize because its often the abused who become abusers. Its just that typically they cant subject the entire country to said abuse.

How did he abuse the nation?

To be frank? Hes inserted his faith in politics. Hes done the Kochs bidding and been on the forefront of hurting our environment, endangering public health. He is spearheading this election integrity BS that seeks to undermine actual election integrity to substitute policies that restrict voting access under the guise of security. He holds Cabinet Bible Studies with a pastor who advocates for male/female segregation and that women who have children shouldnt be allowed to work.

Conservatives either laud these acts or interpret them much differently. But I call things how I see them.

No, it isn't a good book because it is only Conservative. If it was liberal it'd be the same way. It's 5 pages of plot or action followed by 20 pages of author filibuster, over and over again, and the action isn't very interesting either. I like The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Stranger in a Strange Land, which definitely have his political/philosophical views in them, but Starship Troopers is just a manifesto disguised as a book that's passable at best.

I'm not mad at Donald regarding that one quote; my brother nearly recruited me into military service (by my request) until he made it clear to me that no matter what position I signed up for, there was no guarantee of safety in this field. He wasn't going to let me sign up through him unless I knew what I was signing up for.

It's awkward wording and I agree Donald's empathy ain't really there in so much of what we see in his life. That said, I could see a better politician pull off the quote he said there.

Well yeah, it's entirely the phrasing and tone

"Your husband made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, for ideals and family he loved so much as to put his life on the line to defend. We are eternally grateful for his sacrifice, as well as for yours. We cannot begin to comprehend the pain you and your daughter feel today. Your husband was a hero, and we will do our absolute best to honor his legacy as such."

I'm sure Trump didn't intend to offend his family (as I've noted before he's literally incapable of feeling empathy), but it's a pretty terrible thing to hear and the fact that he won't own up to making an insensitive remark is pathetic.

He has absolutely zero excuse for his disgusting lie about Obama and other previous Presidents not calling families of other deceased soldiers, though.

For sure, there are some very nice accounts in the article of other Trump calls to military families after a death

But the ones where there has been no communication are damning

Euvince Brooks's son, Sgt. Roshain E. Brooks, 30, was killed Aug. 13 in Iraq. He has not heard from the White House. The president's claim this week that he had called every military family to lose a son or daughter only upset the Brooks family more.

Brooks said that after watching the news on Tuesday night he wanted to set up a Twitter account to try and get the President's attention.

"I said to my daughter, 'Can you teach me to tweet, so I can tweet at the president and tell him he's a liar?'" he said. "You know when you hear people lying, and you want to fight? That's the way I feel last night. He's a damn liar."
