It used seldestruct(or explosion IDK which it was)

That move causes the user to explode and deal massive damage to the opponent but causes the user to faint.

So it literally exploded preventing me from catching it.

Self-destruct/Explode are moves that do damage but KO the pokemon.

I didn't find my first shiny (outside of Gyarados) until Iron Island (shiny Steelix) in Gen 4... and my bastard partner KO'd it before I could KO him so he wouldn't do that.

Didn't see another shiny until Gen 6, Sandshrew, which I caught and then I saw shiny Corsola this gen while fishing for Mareanie.

So I've only ever caught two shinies between all the breeding and PokeNaving and everything else I've done.

Only one I've found in the wild outside of the Gyarados was a Mareep that I also found in X.

I found and bred a ton in X. Including flabebe, Beldum, Bulbasaur, and Chansey among many others. I did also breed an Eevee to be a Sylveon, but someone else traded me a shiny Eevee with the moveset I wanted. I have a box or two dedicated to shines I've bred or caught. Not sure why they were so common for me in that game.

Got a Pichu from the egg you get from the breeders in Crystal once. Iirc it has a high rate for shiny though, 1/64 or something like that? Honorable mention, I also got Pokerus in Crystal once.

I think my first was a shiny Zubat or a Voltorb in Ruby. I think my next after that was Clefairy in Black. Then I bred a Houndour in Black. In Y I encountered a shiny Psyduck and an Espurr.

My favorite though, was a Piplup I got at the beginning of Platinum last year. I was resetting to see if I could beat the rival and on my third try, I noticed my Piplup was shiny. Needless to say, I didn't reset that time.

All randos. A yanma in Pearl. Boldore and Golett within an hour of each other in Black. Zubats and Magneton in X. Cabrawler and Smeargle (this one was notable since it actually fit the rules of my nuzlocke challenge I had at the time) in moon.

I also managed to get Pokerus 3 times in 4th gen. Twice in Pearl and once before the 3rd gym in Platinum
