Locke narrowly avoided the boots in his first contest and hasn't looked back since. He has 12 top 25 finishes in 19 contests, with 7 of those being top 10s, including a loss to Vivi in one of the closest finals we've ever had (which according to Roba means Locke could never possibly win but hey). He's had a few subpar showings, but his overall resume is great. With this finish, Locke drops from 71.70% to 70.14%, and like Edgar yesterday, he somehow has no one pass him up, so he stays at 13th place overall.

This is Locke's first lower half finish in the New Era, so this one hurts him quite a bit there. He falls from 86.26% to 78.89%, sliding past Red Mage, Rikku, and Cloud to land at 8th place.

Locke absolutely can win at some point in the future, even with a really bizarre anti-FFVI crowd who hates everything in that game for some reason I don't even know

The finals loss was more that Vivi/FFIX people are batshit crazy

I'm sorry but "couldn't even beat a former champion" is going to be my cutoff for a character's championship potential. Whole groups of people refused to vote for Vivi due to the stigma against repeat winners and Locke still couldn't seal the deal. That tells me Locke would've been annihilated if that was Vivi's first appearance in the finals

If a character ever fails to beat a former champion but then goes on to win later I'll gladly admit I was wrong but it ain't happening this year!

I mean, Vivi's the only character who has been back in the finals not just once but twice since they've won (and the other loss was also extremely close if I remember what people were saying, Mesh/Vivi)

I think once a winner makes the finals, theres less stigma about them having won. The issue mostly seems to be in the top 3-10.
