When they play the anthem and want everyone to stand, that's already putting politics into sports. The anthem has nothing to do with football (or baseball or various other sporting events). You could remove it and play the sport just like normal. But since it's there, you can't watch those sports to escape from politics. Standing, kneeling, whatever you do during it, the anthem is inherently political.

The anthem doesn't play every time you start a video game. If escape is what you want, they're a much better choice, which also makes them a bad fit for this analogy.

The national anthem shouldn't be played at sporting events. There is nothing patriotic about sports. Like you said, it's just a game we watch to escape reality and the idea that we have to honor America before every game is played is ridiculous. A country having professional sports where athletes can make millions isn't unique to the U.S so there's really no reason to get all patriotic before the game.

It's not a safe space. I'm a regular Schmoe that needs a few distractions in my life to get me through the week. We all do. Whether it's video games, TV, movies, books - everyone has their escape.

Football is one of mine. It's a healthy escape. It's a healthy interest.

Standing for the anthem is also a political gesture. If you don't want politics in sports, you shouldn't want that either, but you're fine with that gesture because it agrees with your own politics.

Kneeling is no more obtrusive than standing. As a gesture, it's even respectful. People kneel to propose marriage. This brouhaha really is hot air.

A compromise would be to remove the anthem. Then nobody could use it as a political platform for any side. But we all know that would cause a firestorm if it were seriously attempted.

I was never crazy about it but then I figured everyone has a right to their opinion and I didn't think that they were doing it out of disrespect. To me, getting down on one knee is saying I respect you but disagree. So, to me it wasn't a real big deal until president Trump said what he said. I think there were other ways he could have addressed the point, like maybe going to each one that did it and talked to them, get their reasoning. To uninvite the team to the white house was silly. I'm not really into sports but have had friends who are and I know .... you don't mess with their sports stuff! Not ever! If President Trump were running for president right now I think he would lose by a lot.

It's unrealistic. "Sure, draw attention to your cause but do it when far fewer people are paying attention, like on sports radio, even though people already say 'keep your politics out of sports' when you do it that way?" That's idiotic.

During the game these players have the largest audience they're ever going to have. A peaceful protest at that point is absolutely the best idea for their cause.

The NFL was advertising for the Department of Defense, which is part of the reason why players are even on the field for the anthem in the first place. It was never the politics-free zone you imagined it to be.

I'm not so sure about that. I've been reading recently about how European football (AKA soccer) leagues have been trying to crack down on fans taunting players through racial slurs. The N-word used against a player, for example, does not physically affect how the game is played because it is literally just sounds arranged as a word, but many players and fans do feel insulted when they hear it, thus it can affect peoples' ability to enjoy the game. I have a strong feeling most people here on CE would also be upset if we used your logic and told them to "evaluate why that's so problematic," if we told them to not make a big deal out of something like that.

Personally, I agree NFL players have the right to protest and I don't want them to be fired, but I can also see why a lot of people say it's disrespectful. It is disrespectful and the players are hiding behind the First Amendment to be disrespectful, just like people who are racist use the First Amendment to say and write disrespectful things.
