He still has his base, and we are large enough to get him elected a second time.

LOLOLOLOL. Nope, sorry. Unless he's running against Hillary again or someone as disliked, he's completely lost the independent vote and he'll probably be primaried in favor of a better candidate.

Who are Dems gonna put up to compete with him?

Don't care, I'm just hoping that the Republicans put up someone else

They better do a pretty damn good job, then. Trump won the nomination by quite a bit--he was also going against 16 people. They better be a real winner.

I wonder if he still would have won if there were fewer opponents. 16 people had people voting "not Trump." If that was condensed to like five people from the beginning then the votes wouldn't have been spread out so much.

I haven't looked at the actual numbers though.

16 candidates

few of those candidates were ideologically distinct

trump had a devoted (albeit small) base

winner-take-all state primary delegates

that's how trump won the nomination more or less

To me the really sad thing is he had enough charisma to win over both sides, his initial potus speech was unifying and gave the left some hope but its all been downhill since. He is his own worst enemy.

His acceptance speech is what gave people hope

His inauguration speech was (to quote GWB): "Some weird shit"

Yeah that was it the acceptance speech, even the lefty comics were impressed... but then life comes at you fast

Sure, I can give you that many were not particularly impressive or stood out. But my point is, out of 16 people, Trump (as "terrible" as he allegedly is) was able to surpass them all including the few who had a decent shot if Trump wasn't in the picture.

He didn't win because some system is flawed (by which everyone plays by and knows the rules), he won because he was the most popular and chosen by the people, hands down.

The Republican establishment better put someone up really appealing that can defeat the sitting president. History proves that to be somewhat difficult.

Once he gains the Republican nomination, it's up to the Democrats to have someone to defeat Trump. It's really not looking great for them as of yet, but we still have plenty of time to see.

I'm referring to the primaries, not the general. Technically Trump was less popular in the general.

Obama and Bush Jr. were severely disliked as well by their opposite sides.

Even at his worst Obama only touched Trump's average approval

Bush Jr cracked into the 20s after 7 years, a quagmire war(s), and a bungled response to a natural disaster

You're not familiar with how splitting votes works?
