As of now it's the only time, but they fucking go ham on the scene. Afterwards there's still some gore but it's not as bad.

Girls' Last Tour fits the same mold of "cute and chibi characters in a dark and gloomy world" but (as far as I've heard from people who read the manga) it thankfully has none of the gore or super dark stuff that Made In Abyss had. It's about two girls who explore a post-apocalyptic world as the last two humans left on earth. It's super cute because the girls are just finding ways to enjoy the rest of their days with nothing left to lose, but the gloomy, depressing world around them balances it out.







The first episode premiered a couple of days ago, and I'd say it's worth checking out.

Yeah as of now this is the closest we got. It's not bad at all, just very slow. So if you were tripping over the pacing in Made in Abyss, you might not like it.

Black Clover's got potential if you read the manga, but the anime's been pretty middling so far. The MC is really annoying most of the time.

Eh, kinda? It's more like Shin Sekai Yori. Aesthetically, yeah, it's similar to MiA and it has younger characters (~14?). But it seems to be more light-hearted, and I can't see it taking the darker twist MiA did. If you want "Weird setting where young MC discovers weird humanoid", then yeah. But Girls' Last Tour seems like it has a more similar tone.

I mean, Children of Whales has a fantasy setting involving people desperate to explore a world beyond their own, brought about by a mysterious discovery that spurs a ragtag group to break their yoke and explore beyond their understanding. That's Made in Abyss's setup to a T. It may not get as intense as Made in Abyss, but it already carries some similar themes. Girl's Last Tour I really don't find all that similar at all beyond "two kids lead the audience through a mysterious setting."

Still, both are interesting shows with their own strong points. Neither are likely to be as good as Made in Abyss though. Although I always wonder why people think Made in Abyss pulls a bait and switch on its audience. Is it mainly the art direction? Because in terms of themes, it makes it quite clear from the first episode that this show is going to pull few punches going forward. The only thing we were really unaware of was the level it would reach.

Well, I heard it got dark. I went in expecting some grotesque stuff given the depictions of the curse effects from the first few chapters. The stuff that was revealed at the end point of the anime wasn't too bad.

But, Bondrewd's cartridges...holy fuck. I've read a decent amount of manga and novels, but none of them had anything that visceral.

Still planning on picking it up again after the hiatus finishes. World building is decent, mostly carried by the premise and amazing art. Good action, and good characterization. I wonder if the author planned out what's going to be at the bottom beforehand?

Will probably look into the anime now as well.
