Dick coming to the hotel doesn't really any purpose except so the black guy can get killed.

No.

Stephen King is a little bit racist, but I don't think The Shining is an example of that.

I mean, it's basically a running gag at this point that the black guy will either be the first to go or die in a pointless sacrifice.

Well considering the multiple hints and nods to the native american genocide I'd argue probably not.
And in the book Danny uses the shining the basically call him to get help when shit starts hitting the fan, I don't remember if it's the same in the movie since it's been awhile since I've seen it but I assume it is. I've always just figured that in the movie version he just wasn't prepared for or expecting to deal with a deranged Jack and all that so it was pretty realistic in that he got fucked up right away.

lol what

He likes having black characters speak in an extremely stereotypical way.

When I say racist, I mean the tiniest, littlest amount of racist.

Stereotyping is more just a matter of lazy character writing than racism. I mean if you watched a movie and there was some uptight white businessman would you think that's a little racist for stereotyping a type of white dude like that?

I'm thinking more Mr. Mercedes where the black character is an intelligent teenager with his pick of Ivy League schools....and occasionally breaks out into minstrel show jive.

He's definitely a red herring. You think he's going to save the day, but then he dies quickly.

I don't think the movie is racist just because the sole black character died. The characters in the movie -- at least the ones who aren't limited to one scene -- could be counted on one hand.

He did have another guy he talked to who was black, and maybe they could have increased that guy's screen time, but what would have been the point? Oh, now the movie isn't racist because the black guy on the other end of the radio gets TWO scenes and lives.

When a movie has several white characters, and one black character, there's room to complain about the sole black character getting killed. When it's just a couple of parents, their son, and one other guy, it's kind of unfair to say that you have to invent a fifth character just to have a survivor who is black.

Is it outwardly racist? Hell no. The single black guy in the film is heroic and wiser than the actual main characters.

Does it play into some stereotypes such as the 'magical negro' and other such stereotypes? Yeah, a bit. It's difficult to find media from that period that didn't play up at least some of those stereotypes.
