It's like how Raiden was a nobody that got made into an equal to Solid Snake

Raiden was previously a child soldier who killed enough dudes to get a nickname as scary as 'Jack the Ripper'. That was a lot more plausible (well, Metal Gear style plausible) than being a random medic.

The main difference is that MGS2 made it clear that this loser is supposed to be you and Kojima is mocking you the whole time.

...So, a child soldier getting a nickname is more credit than a man who's 2 years older than Big Boss and chosen as his personal field medic, recruited into MSF, and was regarded as one of their best?

I did think that was what they were going to do.

The ideal world, to me, is Konami don't suck and greenlight an open world version of Metal Gear 1 (and maybe 2).

Then you have Hayter saying "this is Snake, commencing operation intrude whatever" as the post-credits conversation.

Yes by far. Because all the story and gameplay of MGS2 gave Raiden "psychopath killer" credit. It's a ridiculous backstory, but there's no other way to explain Raiden and why you are playing him.

In V, there are literally dozens of S+ soldiers that you can collect and play as. They are all worthy to be Big Boss according to MGSV, but why weren't they? No reason. V was just the lucky one picked out.

Part of the descent of Big Boss is him actually cultivating his own legend and cult of personality through the use of smoke and mirrors (ie a body double). He actually intended for his own meme to become a cult of personality-ish figure.

Whereas Solid Snake was modest and insisted he wasn't a hero and that legends are "usually bad news" and that "most of what you hear is actually fiction", Big Boss actually fed into that. It highlights how great Snake actually is, and the difference between them.

You might argue with how it was executed but I like that message a lot, if nothing else.

3 and 4 did this, not V

V didn't add a single thing new to Big Boss other than the cool-but-pointless explanation for why MG2 had a different Big Boss

MGS3 definitely did not do that because they weren't the Patriots yet. MGS3 just set the stage for the fall from grace that Eva explained in MGS4. There was nothing in there about Big Boss perpetuating his own legend through lies and his body double, which is one of the things Eva said sowed the seeds for their split when Zero did it. It also explained why Miller split from Big Boss in the first place, which really would've made no sense just based on Peace Walker.

Yeah for 3 I was mostly referring to XIII's thing about Big Boss being different in regards to pride and legend than Solid Snake via his admiration of The Boss.

And I totally forgot about PW... that one really solidified all the implications of 3/4. But I don't think it was really ever explained by Miller split from Big Boss, even after V.

Is that it? Miller literally double crossed Big Boss already in PW, this body double thing shouldn't have been a big deal. Not enough to go on a rampage trying to kill both Big Bosses. Especially since Ocelot was also technically out of the loop.

I mean the easiest way to explain Raiden is the VR. The whole point was memes and scenes > genes, they imprinted a lot on him. Venom being the best in MSF is definitely a lot more impressive than Raiden being the best of a bunch of Liberian child soldiers. Venom's equivalent of VR is all the memory imprinting stuff he goes through.

Even MGS4 says Big Boss was basically for use as propaganda, which fits into MGS3 with how The Boss was meant to take the fall and MGSV with all that other stuff about the other MSF survivors spreading his legend and Venom himself furthering the legend and not Big Boss. Plenty of people could've been as good as him.

Peace Walker is definitely when Big Boss finished his transformation from 'hero' to 'villain'.

I haven't played MGS5 but I've watched a lot of the material and have heard the specifics from others. The whole 'anyone can be Big Boss' thing is a continuation of the series' nurture-over-nature theme (Solid Snake overcoming his RECESSIVE GENES disadvantage against Liquid, Raiden being molded into a supersoldier through life experieces) but it seems poorly thought-out and hamfisted compared to the other examples. It's one of the reasons I don't really feel the need to play it!

Well, that and no David Hayter. That was a dumb change.

That's not it though. Raiden is the best of a bunch of child soldiers in all of Africa, AND he is taken in by Solidus and raised even further. He is Solidus' protege, like Venom is Big Boss' protege. Plus he is also chosen by The Patriots for their mission.

Yeah, every game it took Hayter more and more effort to reach that Snake voice. He just didn't have it anymore.

although to be fair he wouldn't have needed much to record all of Snake's dialogue in MGSV

I only did the main mission and it's like 2 parts, about 1.5 hours each depending on how you like to play

I think there are a bunch of side-ops similar to MGSV side-ops in the same area, didn't try them but a few looked good

That main mission though is truly mainline MGS material
