Basically uncontroversially loved? I was thinking about this and the closest thing I can think of is like Captain America or something, but those moves don't tend to be loved, they're just money machines, which is a bit different.

It's completely pointless to try and find a series that's universally loved because no opinion is universal. If your question is whether it is the last big budgets series to be generally lauded, no. There are lots.

The first one was cool but it lost my interest somewhere during the second movie. Never bothered to see the third.

Also perhaps the best loved series of recent years is the new Planet of the Apes trilogy, especially when Matt Reeves took over. Also the rare trilogy to improve with every installment.

I've heard plenty of bad stuff about LOTR, but I think I know what you mean. I used to watch the trilogy every year hoping I'd get into it. It's definitely the most beloved blockbuster series by the Academy that I can think of, but public opinion wise it's hard to say such things
