I was digging through some junk and I founded a seal copy of Danganronpa 1 for my PS Vita. Should I play this?

Is is better than Zero Escape?

If you already have it, of course you should play it. The second game is honestly my fifth favorite game of all time. The first is really good too. The premise is a bunch of high schoolers needing to kill another person in order to escape without being caught. If they're caught, they die, but killing is supposedly the only way to escape.

The only polarizing aspect of the story is the minigames which are hit and miss. But for the most part it's just talking with the other characters, investigating after a murder, then having a trial to see if you can catch the killer.

It's not better than Zero Escape, but it's certainly up there. Danganronpa is amazing.

I watched half a lets play of the first game. It's not bad, but it's not great either. It's alright.

I like zero escape more overall, but dangan is still fucking fun.

Zero escape are more serious story, dangan is over the top, crazy level japanese fun.

I dislike the minigames though, but they dont detract much.

But zero time dilemma was disappointing

both 1 and 2 are good to great until you get to the 5th and 6th chapter, then they become mindblowingly good. well 2 is actually just very very good all of the time.

True, ZTD was disappointing but I still found some enjoyment out of it. At least we got some good memes.

I really liked Zero Time Dilemma. Virtue's Last Reward wasn't dark enough and Zero Time Dilemma went all in on dark.

Did you make it to any of the puzzle rooms? The game may seem slow at the beginning, but that happens a lot with VNs because the reader isn't emotionally invested yet. But as time goes on, it's sure to change. Danganronpa has a lot of dialogue and different game mechanics to break up the text, but 999 is a lot more text heavy with inner monologues and exposition. I'll tell ya this, the ending is most definitely worth it. Still one of the best endings I've seen in a long time.

I saw all the series and watched concise retelling of the games on youtube. But yeah, it's just pretty meh. You can take it or leave it.

To be fair, it's not on Umineko's level. Not many things are as mind blowing as Umineko.

Umineko is on another level, ive never seen a japanese story except maybe MGS and maybe Nier Automata as good as higurashi and umineko

Umineko no naku koro ni. A murder mystery visual novel almost twice as long as the bible. A murder mystery of a rich family that takes place in the 80s that questions whether the culprit was a human, or a witch using magic. And one of my favorite series ever. One of the greatest soundtracks ever made as well.

Umineko is 100% VN. No interaction, just read. Although it does very much encourage you think, and attempt to solve it yourself.

Umineko is split into two halves. The first half is The Question Arc and the second is The Answer Arc. The only one on Steam at the moment is the first half, the Question Arc.

It's a kinetic novel, which means no choices or gameplay mechanics. It's pure story, dialogue, music, cgs, and everything that comes with it. The first in the When They Cry Series is Higurashi no naku koro ni. Which takes place in a small Japanese town plagued with a sinister underlying mystery. Where the question is, are the bizarre and creepy behaviors and monstrous murders the work of a human culprit or a curse. They are not connected other than cameos and themes. Opinions on which of the two are better are highly divisive, I'm a bigger fan of Umineko. But they are both masterpieces.

They are both horrors. Also, the steam version of Umineko is crappy imo. The art is ugly and it's unvoiced. The ps3 Umitweak version of the game is the best.

I personally prefer higurashi since umineko gets extremely wordy and drawn out in some of the later chapters. I can't deny that its payoff is extremely good but I find it very hard to recommend for that reason

At their darkest, I think Higurashi gets darker and a bit more brutal. But Umineko has better characters and better setting.

I would say Umineko Question Arcs>Higurashi>Umineko Answer Arcs.

The Steam version can be patched with the PS3 sprites and voices.

There's 2 "series" so to speak in the When They Cry universe: Higurashi and Umineko

Higurashi is a groundhog-day like murder mystery in rural Japan, where every year 1 person disappears and 1 person is murdered during one of their festivals. Higurashi is extremely good, but also extremely long. It has 8 chapters, where the first 4 present 4 scenarios where the same events happen in differing ways, and then the last 4 chapters show directly how these happened, why they happened, etc.
Higurashi is known for its dark atmosphere, amazing music and (if you watch the anime) gruesome murder scenes. Higurashi is definitely worth the read.

Umineko is the "sequel", in a sense. There are only a couple of returning characters, and this time it's a murder mystery set on a private island owned by a rich family, in the midst of a storm where nobody can enter or leave the island. It also follows the groundhog day style pattern where each arc is the same events, but plays out differently. Umineko is top tier and definitely worth the read. You don't have to read Higurashi first but Higurashi will give you the backstory of one of the main characters in Umineko.

Neither of them have any gameplay elements, its pure VNs, there aren't even multiple endings, except for 1 bad ending in Umineko where it's obvious which choice to make.
