It's honestly there to make some people look stupid. Especially old people. Love looking at old people looking stupid tryna work the self check out lane. It's fucking hilarious.

I use them when I want to go and get snacks, and I love that I don't have to make awkward eye contact or pretend to be cheery when I'm buying some random crap for me to eat. Scan your shit, bag it, put your money where the money goes and you're golden - it's all automated, and you take it at your own speed.

Self-checkout lanes are the easiest things to use. The only time you might need/want someone to run your shopping through and bag it all for you is when you have produce or a whole shopping cart full of shit - or if you just prefer the human connection, which is fine too. Otherwise, self-checkout lanes are simple enough for a child to use them. I genuinely don't get how people feel like these machines are condescending or a way to tell people how stupid they are.

The point of self-checkout isn't because people think they can do a better job than the cashier
it's to reduce the strain on cashiers for people who are actually buying big carts of groceries

and, again, it's putting more responsibility in the hands of the consumer
how is that anything but the opposite of "telling the consumer they're fucking idiots"

I only do self-scan when I have a handful of items.
If I'm doing a full grocery shop, it's way faster to go through one of the normal cashiers.
1. They know most of the common produce codes by heart
2. Their scanner doesn't lag while waiting for a scale in the bagging area.
3. They can punch in a number to scan multiples of the same item together.
4. They don't require a supervisor's assistance when an item is too light for the scale to properly register.

Because some people don't understand how it works and still uses it. It's a divider to know who are competent and who is not. It's kinda like the purpose of an express lane is to go fast for people with like 12 items or less but some people can't count so they go on the express lane anyway. The point is moot when people don't know how to use it thus making them look like idiots.

Yeah, that's the way to do it. Super quick if you're just getting a few things to self-check out, but not worth the hassle with a big cart full.

I miss the self checkout lanes at the CVS by my house. I asked the employees why the store for rod of them and they told me people were complaining the machines were difficult to use. Mostly old people tbh. They were the ones I saw trying to use it and getting stuck.

I only use them when I have a few items.

If I have a cart full of groceries, fuck that. Someone else is gonna do my bagging. I don't work for the grocery store for free. When you have a large basket full of crap (and use the self service lane), you run out of room to place your bags. I don't want to place my bags on the floor, so I can get to the next one. It's a lot of hassle - and especially, if there are people behind you.
