There is an ammo trick where, if you already have the type of weapon you want ammo for, you drop yours, pick up the enemy's weapon, then pick up your original. You end up getting a fully loaded weapon this way plus the ammo from your original. Thus usually gives you 3-5x as much ammo per pickup.
