I thought it was very much a 'okay' film. Not good, not bad. Just okay, if a bit silly at times. L was the best part, and well acted.

Obviously this movie ended with the potential for sequels. I knew that was going to be the case as soon as it was announced. I still maintain they should have made it a short one or two season show.

It was ok.
If it had played the characters smarter, I would be assuming that L wrote for Light's dad to question him at the hospital and get his confession. The way the scenes were intermingled made it seem like they were happening at the same time, but it'd be interesting if it was just interspersed flashbacks of what lead up to the final scene.

Light was so dumb though. The entire ending could've been so easily avoided.

"Get me my book, or you die!"
*runs to get the book, and sees his name written in it*
*tears out the page and burns it*
The end.

Or...

He could have written Mia's name in it and controlled her to do whatever he needed, including removing his name from the book. He had till midnight, just write that she fixes it at 11:30 or something.

The ending sequence was just put into place to show that when pressured, Light can put together a long term plan that pays off later... Instead of the incredibly obvious solution.

Insinuating L would write a name in the page is dumb. No revelation scene with him being forced to accept something like a shinigami exists. Decent movie when not comparing to source.

Movie adaptations of video games are better made and received than live action adaptations of anime, if that gives any indication on why you should avoid them like the plague. You'd probably have a better experience with a meal made by a child with no cooking experience.

1/10 . Bad acting, and the writing was atrocious. The whole movie felt rushed and was missing everything that made the anime interesting.

OMFG I was belly laughing so hard when they were falling out of the Ferris Wheel with the slo mo and the music playing. If they were going for fucking hilarious, they succeeded. Not to mention that the whole thing is prefaced by like 10minutes of "wtf, a chase scene?" AHAHAHAHAHA

And oh Jesus, the laughs only continued when the movie was ending and the FUCKING CELINE SONG was playing... OHOHOHOHOHOHO

I enjoyed it just for those laughs, but yeah it was terrible terrible terrible.

Given that they had hours and hours of great source material to draw from, I knew it was going to be a large undertaking to make a movie that would appease fans of the anime and/or manga. Overall, it was pretty bad, but I feel like they did a decent job condensing things down to fit the time constraints of a movie.

I kinda liked what they did with L (although I do think they made him a little overly emotional towards the end). Light was kinda terrible. The actor seemed very uh... amateurish? And wtf was that music selection for the ferris wheel scene? Woof.

I mean, I wouldn't watch it again but... it could have been worse. That's my glowing review.

I'd put it on par with the live action RE movies following the first one. They basically rewrote every character to be worse, and it had so many cheesy moments.

Hmmm, there's a certain separation from the actual killing when using the notebook. Also, thepolice would have most likely been able to deduce it was Light if he had.

Things I didn't mention were that the music selection was indeed strange, and I found parts comedic that I'm not sure we were meant to. Like when Light meets Ryuk. Was that meant to be funny? Cuz Light's screams were killing me, it was hilarious.

I was assuming that was meant to imply his name isn't actually spelled R-Y-U-K and that spelling is just a phonetic approximation of how to say his name. Still stupid, since in the source material it's explained away as you can't kill Shinigami with a Death Note, and that line could be just as easily uttered.
