No.

No he very much is not.


The "fireball" notation indicates a quarter circle forward. It doesnt refer to it being a blast of energy. It ONLY indicates the directional input.

You can use "fireball forward" to do an attack that does not fire energy at all.


So bitching at people for not changing established terminology is not the same as being right.

Person A - "No 'fireball' indicates that the input is a quarter circle forward. The move i was referring to wasn't even a ki blast, it was the one where he dashes forward and grabs you"

Person B - "oh, okay. Now i know that 'fireball + button' can indicate a quarter circle forward."


There is nothing wrong with learning terminology.

So you're saying the "fireball" motion only exists in Street Fighter?

Almost every single fighting game uses that kind of motion. And 90% of the time, it's for a projectile. So instead of people saying "Down, down-right, forward," or "Quarter-circle forward," they just say "Fireball forward." It doesn't matter whether it's actually a fireball in that particular game or not, it's referring to the motion and the move that made it famous.

There is no "He's right," here.

For anybody 100% new to fighting games, "Quartercircle forward" or "qcf" isn't going to make any more sense to them. So why not use the term that the FGC uses? You still have to explain it either way.

for games where you have to hold back to block, yes
it means there's a certain element of commitment necessary, and also puts a little bit of emphasis on reading your opponent and making smart predictions rather than just quick reactions. If a dragon punch only took one button, it would be a lot easier to just hit that once I see my opponent is jumping. When it takes a few inputs to do, I am less likely to be rewarded by merely reacting rather than knowing my opponent is going to jump (or forcing them into a situation where they're likely to)
Charge-type motions (flash kicks, sonic booms, etc) largely rely on the current input setup as well

Also, if all attacks were just button inputs with no directional commands, you'd have a much smaller moveset

I feel like gaming communities always come up with stupid names for this shit just to make things more confusing and harder to get into if you're not already a part of that community. There's a sense of elitism to it, where it feels like they want to drive away anyone who isn't already an insider and knows what they mean. I remember when Smash 4 first came out and on Smashboards there were all these people jumping over each other to come up with some random obfuscating term for a "technique" where you move in a certain way that turned out to not actually exist.

While this is a reasonable stance, the problem here is "yeah but it's a ki blast" is completely missing the point that the term refers to the input, not the actual attack used. There's always going to be technical jargon in a hobby like this - it's not that hard to pick up on it
