what are some old games that don't have updates/remakes (ports are fine) that are still great today?

like if you played it for the first time, there would still be something impressive.

also what are some old games that you're ready to admit don't have that much going for them now besides nostalgia?

6th gen (?) (PS2/GC/Xbox era) or older i guess.

ALttP
Shining Force
Suikoden
Chrono Trigger.
Streets of Rage 2
X-COM: Terror from the Deep.
Time Splitters 2.

Man there's loads of em.

Morrowind for me doesn't hold up, the game play while still awesome in a lot of places still feels really stilted because of the dice roll mechanics being awkward in an fps... and without updating the visuals via mods it looks like someone took a massive shit after eating too much cabbage.

Almost any Gamecube game really. the system was kind of a joke but it had good games.

For other systems there's Shining Force, all three Donkey Kong Country games, ALttP, Yoshi's Island, too many to even remember really.

On the other hand, Zelda 2 is one of my favorite games ever but if I played it for the first time today I would probably quit before the second temple. that game is out for blood.

IMO most well-received old games "hold up" because most qualities that make a game good aren't time- or context- dependent

I guess there are a few games that were held up purely by graphical power, but I think a good aesthetic is something different that is more timeless. Like some people say Morrowind looks "bad" now and in one sense I can agree, but you can't deny that its visual design is unique and praiseworthy

Yeah I still love Morrowind, but I was never sold on the aesthetic at the time but the world itself, and the freedom which are still great. But I can get very similar experiences from the newer releases with better visuals and crisper mechanics.

Nothing will ever compare to the unadulterated freedom Morrowind gave, but it's just not a game I can bring myself to replay anymore without significant mods.
