Not really, just the ones that have enough of an opinion about it to say something. What you're seeing here is the inherent bias in online polling that makes it so suspect. It only attracts the attention of impartial participants.

This is one of the things that gets me about the anti-gay Christians I grew up with. One of my church friends growing up, his dad was gay but married to a woman. All us kids told my friend his dad was gay because he was like stereotypically gay with a lisp and limp wristed and everything. He cheated on his wife all the time but she was unaware until she got an STD and then he finally admitted he was gay. Tore apart the family, the woman is basically helpless now unable to do anything (not medical, just sort of broken as a person now) and their son is having all sorts of issues, people started sending the man threats and bad letters and he killed himself like 5 years later.

Growing up as a gay person in a heavily Christian environment can really really fuck you up. I know from experience.

I was bullied for years over being gay when I literally had no idea what "gay" was (I was very sheltered as a kid) just because I was different. I've also grown up around family members talking about how disgusting gay people are which persists to this day. When I eventually figured out that I was gay and the bullies had been right about me and that my family hated me without realizing it, I felt worthless and attempted suicide. I only avoided therapy by heavily lying for hours about various things but tbh in retrospect I should have gone through therapy because I still have severe emotional issues and am regularly anxious and depressed.

I also knew a dude in high school who was like, the most stereotypical gay kid in the world, but also heavily heavily religious.To this day I'm 90% sure he's gay, but he married a woman anyway. He routinely posts about how shitty his marriage is on Facebook through vague posts asking for prayers on his marital issues but never elaborates. I mean, I can't confirm that he's gay or anything, but I talked to him quite a bit and I'm preeeeeeetty confident and I'm almost positive that that's why his marriage is almost constantly in turmoil.



It's a genuinely awful thing to be gay and grow up in a really religious environment. It leads to a lot of denial, self-loathing, or both. I hear stories like the ones posted in this topic quite a bit and I know from experience that it can fuck you up pretty badly.

Ash has a very gay friendly family, though. I mean, coming out can still be difficult of course but her brother still sounds like a terrible person.

If Dan had just felt like he could be safe and not hated for being himself, he would have never married Lynn. Lynn may have been able to find love and been a happy person. Instead it was someone living a lie, they were clearly miserable the entire time they were married and it just broke so many lives just because people love to hate others.

Anyway, sorry you had to go through what you did. How do you look back on that stuff now? I think about the kids I made fun of when I was younger sometimes, calling a kid the f-word was super common and with some kids we actually thought were gay it got even crueler.

But I should. I've been periodically suicidal for years though I've only made an attempt once. I have actually been leaning towards trying to get therapy in the last few months though because I think I have deeply-rooted emotional issues that I likely need to deal with in some capacity.

@Parappa09 he told my mom and dad years before I knew. They were cool with it. Then my senior year they told me and I was just like ok cool. It didn't change anything. Everyone in my immediate family was ok with it and supports him.
