Quite a twist, the boxing commission have said they'll sanction it as a one off experiment.

This gives McGregor a tiny chance, as it'll give him the ability to be able to deliver that one lucky knockout punch, which would have been next to impossible to deliver the power with regular sized boxing gloves (if he was to get an opening against Mayweather, that is!).

12oz for the weight classes around what they are.

MMA gloves are 4oz, which is why you see so many actual knockouts.

Eh, thicker gloves allow for more powerful blows, as you take less damage to the hands, you can punch with more force without breaking your hands.

Not really. It favors an attacking boxer whereas Mayweather is a defensive one (albeit the best of his generation at it!).

The only possible chance McGregor has is a lucky knockout, and this increases the possibility of it.

Contrary to popular belief, softer gloves mean bigger impacts. Punching someone with your bare fist sucks. It hurts, and your bones aren't designed for it. The increased padding means the aggressor feels less impact, but the softer padding doesn't do much to dampen the concussive force behind the blow, which is the part that fucks you up, not the hardness of the knuckle.

This is BS. This is just spectacle to trick people into thinking Conor has a chance, so people will actually considering wasting a 100 bucks on this nonsense.

I'm not mad this PPV is happening. People should buy it and enjoy it for what it is, a fun over the top show. But anyone buying into Conor having any chance at all is just silly.

Right, which makes you wonder why someone with known hand issues like Mayweather would agree to this.

Because it's about money. The thing is going to do big bucks don't get me wrong, but all signs point to ticket sales and PPV not breaking any records as of yet. Floyd is a smart business man, he knows how to put on a show. He knows people think this thing is a joke, and Conor has no chance, and people don't want to put down a hundred bucks for another May-Pac fiasco.

He's trying to pique people's interest into buying the PPV. That's why he agreed to it. The same reason Floyd's been saying he's "lost a step." This is all lip service to generate interest.

I haven't been paying attention to the PPV or ticket sales. Are the numbers down? I just don't see how the possibility of Floyd breaking his hand on McGregors face in the first round makes for a more exciting fight.

Trust me when I say MMA fighters do not need to hold back on their punches in a fight.

Heavier gloves always produce less kinetic impulse at contact. There is a middle ground between padding and power, and coincidentally it is right around 4-6 ounces. Also to note, a lot of extra weight for boxing gloves comes because the gloves have excess padding and material around non-significant parts of the hand like the thumb and back wrist.

Yep. The answer to anything that has happened in the leadup to this fight and anything that does happen right up until (and possibly even during) the fight is "because it creates hype".

All of Conor's trashtalk, all of the news stories about their sparring matches, all of the Mayweather's bullshit - it's all so that more people buy that PPV ticket.

TO be fair, considering McGregor isn't a real boxer, that would make Mayweather look pretty bad. That he couldn't take down a rookie in however many rounds to win by a judges decision will make Mayweather look like a scrub. Which in turn could hurt the marketability of more stupid fights like this.

But then again Mayweather is basically retired, so why should he care?

McGregor absolutely has power, what a silly thing to say. Plenty of power punchers get it with more violence than technique, like George Foreman, and plenty get it done with smooth transitions and excellent footwork, like Sugar Ray. A few, like prime Tyson, get it done with both. McGregor is in the first camp foremost, but he has a real knack for accuracy and the instincts to attack after a stunning jab or counter.

Actually landing a punch on Mayweather is the problem.
