Oh hey, it's August 23rd, which means it's Squall's birthday. Now his game is older than he is. I used to do an annual FFVIII replay that coincided with his birthday, but maybe now I'll wait until Jeff Zero returns and we can make a mini-FF marathon out of it since we already started FFVII. We can play through the entire golden era.

Whew, Futaba's Palace complete in Persona 5. Overall, I think it's one of my favorite Palaces in the game, although it has some annoying things, like enemies randomly spawning under the guise of popping out of coffins. Probably the most annoying boss fight in the game, too. But I like the design and the puzzles are pretty fun. The length is just about right. Plus, Futaba herself is pretty great here, like her jumping out of the closet and asking them to steal her heart quickly, only to duck back into the closet when she learns it doesn't work that way. Her Shadow talking sense into her and causing her to awaken to her Persona is awesome, too.

After experiencing it with the benefit of foresight, I feel like what Shido did to Futaba and her mother might have been the most despicable thing of all. Mentally shutting down her mother to steal her research and then forging a suicide note and traumatizing Futaba to cover your tracks? Yikes.

Oh man, finally beat a puzzle in Diabolical Box that had me stumped for a while. It's one of those puzzles where you have to jump the silver balls over each other and they disappear when they do, so you have to get it down to where there's only one left. It's kind of like that peg game at Cracker Barrel (which I also suck at). I had beaten a couple of these already, but this one took me forever. I feel like I must have tried every possible permutation of this puzzle except for the correct one, but I eventually got it!

why didn't I notice before in Persona 5 that all the bosses represent the Seven Deadly Sins, with Futaba's mom representing wrath and Futaba's Shadow representing sloth

although Madarame ends up being redundant

I like the fact that in Mishima's and I think later Futaba's Confidants, you can just jump straight into Mementos during the time you're spending with them to defeat the Shadows you need to instead of needing to devote a separate trip to Mementos for it. It'd have been nice if they all worked that way!

I've heard a lot of variations on how the Seven Deadly Sins were incorporated in Persona 5. I think most agree that the two hidden Sins, Vanity and Apathy, are also incorporated in, especially with Madarame's Palace being called the Museum of Vanity.

I kinda wished they just made Madarame a traditional Sin so that it's a nice, clean Seven Sins reference.

Yeah, they use the Seven Deadly Sins + Vanity + Maybe Emptiness? Madarame is Vanity. The People of Tokyo are Sloth. The trophies back this up. TVTropes (yeah i know) claims Akechi is Emptiness. Yaldabaoth has attacks named after them all to hammer the point home (if he has an Emptiness attack, I'd buy the Akechi theory, if not ehhhh)

I don't feel like the game even obliquely implies that about Akechi. TVTropes more like TVTrippin'

Emptiness was Adachi's thing, man.

Now there are some interesting parallels to be drawn between Joker and Akechi, like the fact that the latter has the Wild Card but only two Personas because he insists on doing everything alone and hasn't formed bonds with anybody except Joker. The game doesn't really explore that very much either though.

It's weird to say this about a game I spent over 100 hours beating, but I feel like if there was one disappointment I had with Persona 5, it's that there were some interesting things that were never really explored very much.

On the parallels, I totally agree and I really wished they explored this side of Akechi more. Unfortunately, it was just kinda...there and lasted a scene.

And yeah, Futaba is described as Sloth, but the Prison is also called Prison of Sloth, sooo....I dunno. Either we get a double Sin or something.

Oh, is it called that? I don't remember. Well, like I said, they were a little redundant with Madarame being Vanity and Shido being Pride anyway. Plus, Wakaba wasn't even a Shadow! She was a cognition! Inconsistency abounds...!

Also, I forgot about a cognition of Futaba's real mother showing up after you defeat the sphinx. Part of me wonders if that wasn't actually a remnant of her real mother in the Metaverse and not merely Futaba's cognition. But again, they don't really expound on the backstory of what happened to Wakaba very much!

Man, if you finish Palace 4 as quickly as you can, there's a huge gap between that and the deadline. Is that the Palace you have the most time to finish? I've been going crazy with my Confidants the last couple of nights, and I still haven't quite made it to the deadline yet. I've been leveling them pretty evenly, and I've gotten a couple of the ones I didn't finish last time either as far as or beyond where I got them last time. I've also been using a guide to make sure to pick the right answers every time, so that helps!

I need to play Dragon Age at some point, but that feels like something Jeff Zero should be here for.

At this point, I know I need to play Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Trails the 3rd/Cold Steel, and Dragon Quest VIII (when I can work up the motivation to do so because I still owe it to LotM).

And I guess I'll keep playing the Layton games, although who knows when I'll actually finish Diabolical Box when I keep getting stuck on puzzles and I'm too stubborn to quit or look up the answer. Based on the journal entries, I'd guess I'm about 75-80% done with the game though.

I need to get back and finish up my DQVIII 3DS playthrough. I stopped for a while because I was trying to read all NPC dialogue every time they updated (which happens for many towns after every major story event) and it was getting kinda draining. I still load it up every week to download the DLC items, though.

I've stockpiled several Confidant quests during this large break after Palace 4 so I can make just one big trip into Mementos instead of a bunch of little ones. So far, I've got Fortune, Hanged Man, Devil, and Star.
