I definitely believe male cast beats the female cast. Kanji, Yu, Teddie, and Yosuke are all good.

Narukami is the best character of the bunch, but they're pretty evenly dispersed between male and female for me.

Narukami > Yukiko > Rise > Kanji > Chie > Yosuke > Naoto > Teddie

Anyway, I've played a couple hours of Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. One thing I've learned is that I am the worst at those puzzles where you have to put a bunch of different items of varying shapes into a small space without any of them overlapping. I can almost never complete those without using hint coins.

Also, I totally forgot that the American version uses a different voice for Luke than the British version for some reason because they kept the British VA for Layton/Ace Attorney. Threw me for a loop the first time I heard his voice here because I wasn't used to it, and it's been a while since I've played Curious Village.

Speaking of Curious Village, heck yeah Flora is back! She was probably my favorite character from the original game.

Also, do I get a greater charm increase from watching a movie (1500 yen) than I get from the pheromone coffee (500 yen)?

I'd honestly guess Chie is probably the most popular P4 character, but I doubt there's any definitive way to prove it.

Not sure who the voter base for that was or how many people voted, but that's all I could find in terms of any sort of poll about most popular character from the game.

I would give the male cast of P4 a very slight edge:

Kanji > Yukiko > Rise > Yu > Yosuke > Teddie > Chie > Naoto

Incidentally, my P5 ranking is a complete gender flip of this:

Makoto > Yusuke > Joker > Futaba > Ann >= Haru > Ryuji > Morgana

Oh man good School Rumble episodes with Harima staying at Mikoto's house and pretending to be a worker there while helping out Eri.

I love the new ED that starts playing here, too. It's really poignant (especially when you know how the series ends). It's also cool that they did an English dub for it, with Luci Christian and Caitlin Glass singing Tenma's and Yakumo's parts.

Sliding block puzzles always gave me the most trouble

I like how all the treasures in Madarame's Palace are cheap things like plastic frames or things literally called Crappy Portraits to emphasize how much of a fraud the guy is.

Slowly but surely getting a better hang of Zestiria's battle system. Main problem now is the AI is dumb and can be knocked out by a slight breeze.

Part of this is on me since I keep cranking up the difficulty (I'm currently on Intense, which I unlocked by fighting a bunch on Hard) but at the same time the game kind of encourages it by giving you better drops, the only way to get certain drops, more gold, etc.

but it doesn't help that you no longer gain HP from leveling and healing is made a lot more complicated (including "healing but not really" where you have to engage a separate subsystem to actually have the heals apply instead of sitting in stock) and the AI is just dumb

But even with all that it's usually okay. But then it threw this boss which was laughably beyond everything else this game has had so far. It's nearly twice my level, the first part is just a stall/survive so no big deal. But then the second part is another survive, but you have to knock it down to like half health to continue. But the boss is intentionally resistant to almost everything you have available and can one-shot with certain moves. (Once you get past THAT you're given the tools to make the fight manageable but god.) Had to turn the difficulty down two notches from Intense to clear it. Maybe if I decided to be crazy stubborn I could have won on Hard but after a bunch of BS I went "screw it"

Strategy options seem to suck compared to previous Tales games too. I have them set to try and defend/recover if they drop under 50% HP but do they do that? Hardly ever. I can usually force them with a party command but that means everyone stops any offense, so if there's multiple enemies that I can't all tie up by myself (and I usually can't!) they can just run over and wail on my team and interrupt any healing attempts.

basically they're dumb

and try to cost me grade and items. and grade has immediate benefits here and isn't just a grade shop thing.

Made it to the second change of heart in Persona 5, so we're in early June now. The boss was much easier the second time around because of all the NG+ benefits. Feels like I'm blowing through the Confidants now, although I've still got a lot I haven't even started yet.

Sonic Mania is only a few hours away though, so I'll probably put down P5 for a few days.

Played a little more of Diabolical Box today. I understand the puzzles are the appeal, but they also wreck the pacing when every conversation involves a puzzle or two. Also, more Flora, please.

All right, played through four or five zones of Sonic Mania. Really fun game. Great level design. Bosses are surprisingly quirky in a good way. It's not the standard fare you've come to expect for 2-D Sonic. The remakes of the old zones are excellent. There are enough homages that you can recognize certain areas of the zone if you grew up playing Sonic, but there are enough differences that it's not a simple retread.

My eyes are feeling a little strained from all the intense concentration, so I probably won't play anymore tonight though!

Harima has a really good monologue in the School Rumble Christmas episode. "I have a future? I never thought about that before. Me? A future?" Just shows how far he's come and how he's breaking the mold of his stereotype. He had accepted what everyone said about him, but now he realizes they might have been wrong. It's a good scene.

All zones beaten as Sonic/Tails. Now all I need to do is get the rest of the Chaos Emeralds so I can (presumably) unlock the real final boss before I do a Knuckles playthrough.

Really fun game. The level design is really good, and if you're a fan of "old school" difficulty, Sonic Mania definitely has it. It also has save slots, so no worries about starting over from the very beginning when you run out of lives! But there is an option to do a no save run, and you can unlock certain bonuses exclusively for a no-saves run to help you out.
