Yep, I've maxed out Chariot, Lovers, Death, and Temperance already. Priestess is at level 9 and I might just let it sit there for a while for reasons stated earlier, at least for one more Palace.

Also, I learned the gift you get on Christmas that makes it easier for you to level up a Confidant only applies to the Confidant that gave it to you in NG+. Of course, I got Makoto's last time, who probably is the most absurdly easy Confidant to level up, so whatever.

And in some cases, the gifts you get from maxed Confidants on the last day of the game do unlock ALL abilities for a Confidant in a NG+. Hierophant, Fortune, Sun, and Moon all unlock everything from the start. Presumably some of the others that I didn't max out do, too, like Devil (whose abilities are useless anyway unless the Level 10 is something special so whatever)

God I hate the Oil Ocean Zone 2 boss

Once I killed him but then got hit and died immediately afterward anyway

I've also seemingly randomly died multiple times when falling into the oil, with rings on hand. I'm pretty sure I didn't sink to the bottom because it happened like instantly.

If you're directly underneath the octopus's mouth when he goes under, he'll drag you straight to the bottom and it'll kill you. If you're standing on the platform when it goes under, the same thing happens. The best thing to do is destroy the little tentacles that shoot at you first, but you're better off hitting one a couple of times and fleeing to the platform on the other end before it starts shooting and repeat until they're both gone. The octopus can't do any damage to you at that point, so you can gradually take it down. Your chances of winning are better if you treat it as a battle of attrition and stay patient.

All right, I've been watching a little bit of the DGS2 playthrough. They've got most of the first case done.

Susato is as amazing as ever. She might be my second favorite assistant in the series. Letting her be the playable character for one case was a really cool choice, too.

They're both super long and I'm super bad at dealing with those sling sphere things

Zestiria is a funny game. The amount of Grade you can get in some fights is just hilarious. Got over 700 Grade in a single fight not too long ago. IIRC, that would allow you to buy a not insignificant amount of stuff from Symphonia's Grade Shop by itself.

Also a bit surprised that even lately I've figured out some new "tricks" to use in battle. I'm still having quite a bit of fun with it, though apparently I'm being told Zestiria gets really bad eventually? so there's that.

This is actually a much better final boss, but in terms of sheer absurdity I like (Super Paper Mario) giant mecha Luigi cosplaying as a squid jester from hell...or something like that anyway.

The Super Paper Mario last boss is hilarious to jank by jumping above him as Mario and then switching him out for Bowser and letting him bounce on his head repeatedly for ridiculous damage.

Super Paper Mario was actually kinda fun. Last good Paper Mario game, really.

Well, if we're evaluating this by gameplay only, then it's Drakengard 3 by a mile.

But that's only awful to play. Thematically/style-wise it's an incredible final boss.

I legit love Super Paper Mario. I think it's really a fantastic game that ended up suffering a lot in terms of its reception by the fact that it had the Paper Mario name attached to it and wasn't just its own game.

I think people were disappointed Super Paper Mario wasn't an RPG, and I guess I sorta get that. It was really fun for what it was though, and the writing was still solid.

it's amazing how the team who made Sticker Star seemingly had no idea why the other games are beloved

it's also perhaps the only RPG battle system I've ever seen where random battles are actively detrimental

I'm almost done watching Sweetness & Lightning. I've only got a couple of episodes left. It's been enjoyable, but it's very episodic and I wish they'd go a little deeper with it. Unless something drastically changes here at the end (and I doubt it will), it'll probably go on the "Liked it but probably won't watch again" tier.

All right, finished Chapter 6 of Diabolical Box. We're getting ready to enter Herzen Castle and find the vampire, who is almost certainly the duke's son, who looks like a stereotypical vampire based on the portrait of him we saw in the museum. We're learning more about the supposed curse of the town, which is related to some mysterious element they discovered in the gold mines. It apparently started making a bunch of people sick, and that's why most of the people skipped town to found Dropstone. We've only got one journal entry left to find, so yeah, it's pretty clear the dude writing the journal is the vampire, and the lost love is Katia's grandmother. I assume Katia's going to show back up at some point soon, too.

Based on the chapter title and the image, we're near the end of the game and Layton's going to have a sword fight with the vampire, so that should be fun.

I decided to go ahead and buy Unwound Future. I'm enjoying Diabolical Box enough that I'll commit to the next game, which I've always heard is the best one anyway.

Angel Beats hype!

While not as good as the previous Key works, I think Little Busters and Planetarian are solid. Rewrite and especially Charlotte are less recomended, though.

Can I recommend the Little Busters VN instead of the anime?

I think it's the only case where I've seen/read both anime and source material, and I definitely enjoyed the VN a lot more.

That's totally reasonable. I've never read the Clannad VN or the Steins;Gate VN for pretty much that exact reason. Little Busters is a bit different because in that case I started with the VN, and also I think the anime for S;G/Clannad were better, but the principle still holds I think.

For the record I don't think I spent 100 hours on Little Busters, but it was definitely one of the longest VN's I've read. There's a common route plus 7 character routes and then an After Story type route at the end, so that probably ended up at least at the 60-70 hour range. Also I'm not even factoring in the moderate time sink that was the baseball minigame so actually maybe it is pushing up on 100 hours >.>

The Steins;Gate VNs are a much more reasonable length and read than the Clannad VN because they don't make you jump through hoops to get all the endings. There are much fewer variations, bad endings, important choices, etc. especially in Zero. I probably spent less time on the two Steins;Gate VNs combined than I did on Clannad.

Clannad just has a crazy amount of content. I think that's mostly a good thing, really, especially since so much of it is comedy stuff. Laser tag is pretty incredible.
