I don't do it because I'm genuinely confused. In this article the person's name is Heather, they are a woman, and they are transgender. I would think that being transgender calling them a man would comply with their preference. But apparently this is taken as an insult.

It was discussed in another topic that for its usage in the English language gender is agreed upon by 2 observers to identify a 3rd party.
- If there are 2 observers, and one says "Look at what Heather is doing", but the other observer doesn't know who has the given name of Heather, then this does not identify the 3rd party to them.
- If there are 2 observers, and one knows that a 3rd party is a woman that prefers to be called a man, but the other observer doesn't know this about the 3rd party, then saying "Look at what that man is doing" would rule out the individual to the other observer.

The preference of the individual doesn't change how they are observed. If their preference is counter to outside observation then in order to call them by their preference first that preference must be made known. Going back to this article I think TenNapel was using the available information to discern what Heather's preference was and trying to comply with it.

But it does affect me and the rest of the population. It changes a lot about your day to day interaction.

It used to be that you could intuit someone's gender just by looking at them because sex and gender were considered one in the same. Sure, you'd have more masculine women and more feminine men, but a feminine man was still a man and a masculine woman was still a woman.

So aside from bizarre cases, you would never have to guess when referring to someone's gender. "He told me it cost 10 dollars", "She went with me to the parking lot", etc. When someone walks up to you in your place of employment they could say, "Excuse me (Sir, Ma'am, Miss,)" etc.

You, as an alleged writer, should be particularly aware of this. Think of business communication when you're addressing someone professionally. Do you say Mr or Mrs? That's usually pretty easy to answer when they have a gendered name. But what if they don't? You have to try to find some way to bullshit around it, and frankly it's a pain in the ass.

That's changing something that's fundamental to speech and human interaction. I'm not saying it's not something worth changing, but let's not pretend it's just a 'nothing' thing.
