It's actually very imaginative vs just making up words or, in digimon's case, saying what it is then adding "mon" afterward (Angemon! Devimon! Teddymon! Puppetmon!)

lolwut? No, they put at least the same amount of effort in. The starter naming conventions are similar (ie, compound words) and nothing seems to just be a flat-out combination of random letters. Gen3, for starters, has Treecko (Tree + Gecko), Torchic (Torch + Chick, name for a young bird; actually really clever how it fits together), and Mudkip (Mud +....well, it might be an abridged version of Mudskipper)

It's also weird how everybody goes, "Well, after Gen2...", like because that's where they stopped it's somehow relevant or applicable on a broader scale.

Dinosaur in Latin means "Terrible Lizard." While it's probably where they got the idea, it's worth remembering that they incorporated only the "lizard" half of the word. Granted, physiologically-speaking, a Venusaur would almost certainly be a reptile rather than a dinosaur given its hip joints and the fact it's powered by the sun (a close parallel would be a dimetrodon, whose sail took in the sun's rays to heat up its body).

^ ^ Hey I suggested solar beam as well! Great minds think a like-like.

However I'm leaning more towards him using vinewhip, having vines extend out of his flower back would have been a much better animation tactic in terms of looking dynamic. But of course they were pressed for time after all.

tbh, the laziest Pokemon name might be Pineco. It's literally just a pinecone with eyes where they chopped the "ne" off "Pinecone" when naming it.

Conversely, I like a lot of the compound word names like Murkrow where the two logically flow together. The word "murk" also works exceptionally well considering it's a dark type.

Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee were always pretty cool to me because several regions changed them to something meaningful for them. English is obviously Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. In Japan they're named after Hiroyuki Ebiwara and Tadashi Sawamura. In Korea they're named after Hong Soo-hwan and Yi Sung-sun.

Houndour = Hound + Dour
Dour meaning "relentlessly severe, stern, or gloomy in manner or appearance."

Which is a great name, since it's a compound word making use of a lesser-known adjective. Less impressive is Houndoom, which is Hound + Doom.

tbh, I always thought the meaning pretty clear -- especially because a similar convention was used on houndoom (no, he's not "the hound of the room") -- although I recognized the embedded word immediately. Possibly due to my dyslexia, which is why I've easily spotted anagrams at times (The Babadook, for instance)
