I really should do that. I only played a handful of PS1 games and missed out on 90% of their rpg's. Summer was always the time to play rpg's so maybe I'll do that next year if I get enough time

It costs a ridiculous amount of money to make a videogame nowadays, which is why the industry is collapsing into "safe" archetypes.

Everything else is dismissed as "indie trash".

DOOM was pretty good but it got really repetitive towards the end but I'll give you that. BotW I haven't beaten but the parts I've played are good enough but not what everyone has hyped it up to be

I wouldn't say it's bad, though not as good as previous.

The biggest thing is that innovation is dead at the hands of "tried and true" strategies that make guaranteed profits. Gaming (and entertainment media in general) has transformed into something much more about the money than it used to be.

Maybe Witcher 3
Persona 5

Everything else is trash or just a decent time waster like Mortal Kombat or battlefield where you have fun for an hour but it's ultimately entirely forgettable

They stopped innovating game play and started innovating monetization models

Who cares? Just play old games. I know there are enough old games I've never played to last me a lifetime if I ever decided to try them out. I don't think this generation is necessarily worse than any other, but it doesn't matter to me either way. I'll be playing a lot of old shit along with the new.

Part of the "problem" is just the time and money associated with these big AAA games. I've enjoyed a bunch of games this gen but I'm not particularly hard to please. For instance, I don't need a new football or baseball game every year. I'm still playing the first Madden to come out on PS4, I'm still playing the Show 2015, I'm still playing Mortal Kombat XL and GTA Online. Doom was fun but eh, haven't played it in a while, Star Wars Battlefront is the same, I play with my little bro but that's about it and he lives on the other side of the country. The Witcher 3 is great, BotW is pretty good but I'm not as invested as I was with past LoZ games. Fuck, I haven't bought a new wrestling game since 2k14 and that's last gen. Then I also still play a bunch of my last gen games like 2k14 and Red Dead Redemption. And I just pick up my N64 and SNES from my parents garage and I have a couple hundred games from those.

Basically, I think you're getting older my friend. I know I am and games that I would've killed for 10 years ago don't interest me whatsoever. Like, I have no interest in Mario Odyssey. It just say its you getting older and your interest are changing but you just haven't realized it yet. Took me like 4 years to realize it.

It just say its you getting older and your interest are changing but you just haven't realized it yet. Took me like 4 years to realize it.

this may well be it, I played deus ex for the first time this year and it boggles my mind how that game trumped most of what I've played in the past few years

At the very least, there's finally acceptance that Switch is a gaming system too.

I have an XB1 and a PS4 but honestly I haven't played them in months. Been on my PC enjoying a lot of great games there. But I'm sure XB1 and PS4 have plenty of fun games to offer. Many times as we age we let nostalgia trick us into believing games these days aren't as good as they once were. I think it's important to keep a positive outlook, and not focus too much on the "Good old days". It's healthy to reminisce every now and again, but don't let it corrupt your opinion of modern games.

Modern gaming is still awesome.

That's my take on it ;)

Final boss fights cannot be difficult because if a player gets stuck there it's like killing the event right at its climax. A gameover is no longer a failure on the player's part but rather on the developer's.

I don't mean game over in the sense of having to restart from the beginning of the game or whatever, I mean in the sense of a meaningful fail state as a result for playing poorly that makes you need to play well to avoid.

A good example of what I meant here is undertale. Which I do like overall but this part of it is pretty :|

I actually agree that the sort of game over that makes you have to redo tons and tons of stuff also doesn't really have much of a place in gaming either. If your game gets a lot of its difficulty through having a few choice difficult parts with long iteration times (cough cough dark souls) that's also a poor design choice

Honestly, there are good games coming out but AAA gaming has gotten super fucking stale.

If you want decent games you have to really be into Japanese stuff or indy stuff really. AAA is still dominated with mediocre shooters, boring open world games, games that try too damn hard to be a movie or *shudder* ubisofts online shit.
