I'm watching it on Adult Swim's official website. I believe they're streaming Rickshank Redemption at 11, followed by the new episode.

pretty much agree.

I liked the theme but it was a little too on the nose at certain parts. summer's behavior in particular at times felt like it was just too much, beyond realism. I get that it's a cartoon but if you're going to make an episode about human emotions and human problems the characters should probably at least act human.

setting was cool from start to finish pretty much. the stuff with rick turning it into a not-apocalyptic society was pretty creative but also funny.

jerry getting attacked by a stray dog at the end was not funny. I was tired of this low brow "meg must be bullied in every episode of family guy" humor about an entire season ago.

the robots cracked me up and I'm kinda disappointed they'll just never be back. really shows how terrible of a person Rick is that he can create "life" and then just destroy it without even a second of hesitation. you might say they weren't really alive but watching how they acted (they were CLEARLY not summer and morty), at the very least they had the illusion of having their own personality and characterization. when I think about it more this might have been one of the most interesting aspects of this episode. especially because it's not really shoved in your face like the "I don't care about anything because I'm going through hard times" theme.

I feel like they've been mishandling Jerry's character for a while now. Using him as the punching bag works when he's causing his own problems. When he's in the right and still get punched, it just gets old. His decision to make an ultimatum in regards to Rick is already looking super justified, but the episode painted everyone's divorce angst as mostly being Jerry's fault. The episode also more or less showcased how awful a parent Beth looks like when Jerry isn't around to make fun of - can't tell apart her family from obvious robots for three weeks straight because they kept telling her what she wanted to hear. Very similar to when Jerry loved being in the illusion world because it was fulfilling all his life's wishes. Beth isn't called a loser by the wind though, also doesn't have her checks eaten by random dog (that was really random). This is a double-edged issue for me because it's both poor writing and not funny.

I do appreciate Morty growing increasingly tired of Rick's shit though.

yeah no kidding. when you frame it in those terms it becomes even more ridiculous. she literally IS Jerry, but for some reason he gets all the shit in the world and she gets no shit.

Also just realized I used the phrase 'double-edged sword' wrong. Whoops.

The Morty bot was probably the highlight of the episode for me. The way it waxed poetic about wanting to frolic through the streams and eat ice cream 'for real' was so over-the-top and dark.

Wonder if Summer is going to keep that tattoo.

Agree with the good but not great assessment.

The problem I have with the divorce is that he might be pulling from real life and using it to vent with himself going through that process between season 2 and 3.

I have to agree with the consensus of the ep just being "okay". The setting was cool, the Morty and Summer bots were funny, but it felt like a dry episode. Semantics dome was a fun line.

Also the whole thing with the bucket guy being unsure whether or not to keep the moustache or not and him not being sure if he's basing his actions on what other people think really reminded me of something similar in the Community pilot, with Troy's letter jacket. Not sure if it was a deliberate reference (since it was Joel McHale doing the voice) or if it was just Harmon going to that well again.

Main things I am hoping for this season in regards to the whole divorce plot

Jerry turning things around somehow and coming out ahead

Beth finally getting to be in her father's life (go on Rick adventures) like she always wanted only for it to turn out not to be what she was hoping for and gradually starts to snap

also would be kinda neat if at the end of the season Beth and the family try to get Jerry to come back only for him to say No. Hey, "don't look back" right?

Finally watched it. It was definitely a very tame episode. I was unsure of Summer's behaviour but glad it doesn't seem like it is going to carry on too heavily. I loved the robot versions. Beth being completely oblivious to it as well is great.

I think shit is going to crash down around Rick at some point. It seemed like he almost lost control of shit that episode, and as much as I like Rick he is a dick that deserves comeuppance.

That's actually one of the things I didn't like. Jerry would've easily fallen for those but I give Beth a little more credit.

I was hoping to see her like screwing with the robots by the end, sort of like Rick would've in the same situation

i also thought jordan peele was samuel l. jackson due to his mannerisms, but i'd never ever think 'hey that's key/peele' because i don't really know them either

I thought it was a return to form

Going massively over the top on the absurd adventure and gratuitous violence on one side to juxtapose with the stilted therapy environment as a way of showing that therapy is "work" that Rick doesn't want to do when he could be doing something awesome was very good.

Also it was hilarious. Beth is becoming a super unlikable character though, moreso than ever before.

alright so here's my brief notes from the episode

the action and gore was both hilarious and awesome to see unfold. very cool way to take a very dry subject as the B Plot, but use the A Plot to keep us entertained through the entire episode. I feel like it was done really well too. it never felt as if we cut away from the action scenes too soon, nor did it feel like we lingered on the therapy scenes too long at any given point. masterful use of time per scene here.

the therapy stuff was all great. I agree that Beth's PERSONALITY has become more unlikable than ever. however, I appreciate her CHARACTERIZATION more than ever before in this episode. last week I was complaining that she acts just as bad as Jerry but is never given any shit. well, this is the episode where she was clearly cast as the person in the wrong and it was very vindicating. the show runners and the meta of the universe has clearly acknowledged that Beth's PERSONALITY has problems and they are taking steps to address them and hold her accountable. this is good CHARACTERIZATION. (in my opinion of course; this largely has to do with how Summer and Morty act during the scene. they are often used as the viewpoint or mouthpiece of the viewer and so for them to see that Beth's behavior was being focused on here as a point of therapy and also to very quickly catch on that the session improved both Beth and Rick's demeanor was very rewarding)

Jaguar was just fucking awesome. so hilarious how Rick and Morty is amazing at introducing and establishing simple and quirky characters and making them so great with such little use of time. I think it helps that they often go to cliche tropes but lampshade them or subvert them in different ways, and that was certainly on display here. I really hope we get to see him return at some point in the future, but I won't be holding my breath over it. he still works as a one time gag either way. the end credits scene was a good enough send off.

the final therapy scene where Rick joins them is definitely the highlight of the episode for me. as a scientist myself and someone who has very low regard for soft sciences (therapy and social science especially) it was very intriguing to see Rick's thoughts unfold here as well as the therapists responses to his criticisms. I thought both of their monologues were good and came from an informed and "true" feeling position which made it feel as if the characters were representations of real people and viewpoints rather than just straw men. in particular I loved the therapists monologue -- not because she shared the same viewpoint as me, quite the opposite -- she actually challenged me to think about my own views of the world and consider my own outlook on life. if a 20 minute cartoon about a pickle genociding rats can make me seriously contemplate about emotional and personal issues like that it's something honestly pretty amazing. this will go down as one of my all time favorite episodes for sure.

The show expects trope-savvy, "smart" viewers who have watched a lot of movies, what with all the references it makes. So when Jaguar is introduced, with the way his intro was shot, his voice, his name, his dialogue, we just sort of mentally fill in the blanks and understand the character very quickly. It's very smart.

Yeah. Another notable thing about Jaguar is that this is not the Family Guy style of dartboard punchline, either. They didn't just choose to randomly insert a hilarious "Overpowered Mercenary Locked in a Hole Who Has Given Up On Life Because His Daughter Was Killed" for no reason. I mean, yeah, it was funny. But they specifically chose this punchline because it's an episode where Rick is dealing with father/daughter issues.
