It would be somewhere in the mid-West, right? Those states are pretty middle-class and suburban? Iowa? Kansas? Minnesota?

Smart, successful, great at what we do. That's Massachusetts.

Of course, those tides have recently turned with this administration.

Pennysyviania is a good answer, I think. Middle-class, industrialised, successful.

Massachussets, too. But New England isn't really that representative of America, perhaps. Too much wealth, too old.

PA
Mountains and civilization to the west.
A crappy city to the east
A whole lot of flat nothingness in the middle.

New York or Texas.

New York is probably the first thing people outside of USA think what america is like
Texas because they probably think people still do cowboy stuff

Though I don't know if the current government of Texas is dysfunctional, everything else fits.

Ohio

Our state motto was "The heart of it all" for a couple decades, and it was always fairly appropriate. The state's roughly heart-shaped, it's right about where a heart would be anatomically, and there's a ton of diversity in terms of urban/suburban/rural living. There's major river and lake access, too. And it's a swing state, so it's represented both sides politically in the past. Pretty much every quality of the U.S. can be found in Ohio somewhere.

I was tempted to agree with the IL points, but the Texas rebuttal works too... plus, like America, they have the urge to secede and be their own country.

Ohio lacks a major coastal business center, which is why I give Pennsylvania the edge here.

Cleveland is on the rise, though.

There is actually a right answer to this question, and it's Nevada. (I've seen Nate Silver and Harry Enten discuss it.)

Note: demographically speaking.
