I feel like you can get away with tipping lower if you also don't make a mess, clean up after yourself, and just be a good customer. But it's still pretty customary to tip at a restaurant... Why exactly are so many people anti-tipping anyway? Do you not like being nice to others?

It's not really about being nice to others. Like you said, it's become customary. It doesn't mean much if it's assumed we give tips for any service except the worst.
I'd personally prefer to just pay more for the meal and pay the servers a set wage, rather than go through the ceremony of tipping

It's a dumb custom that became popular so restaurants didn't have to pay people a decent wage.

I mean if you don't want to worry about factoring tips into your dinner you could, you know, go to a casual eatery that doesn't have wait service. Or alternately, eat at fucking home and tip yourself, if it bothers you so much.

Seriously, the whole tipping/low-rage dynamic in restaurants is incredibly stupid. But equally as stupid is people who go "I'm sick of having to tip my server! It's such a backwards system!" then turn around and eat out twice a week where they tip the server anyway.

Not the main reason why I just make my meals at home, but it's another thing I can point at to justify it. Only problem is that when going out with others, the tipping is unavoidable. I want to sit down, eat, and enjoy myself instead of having waiters being pressured into needlessly checking in on me (thus interrupting my meal) and without me having to think about and calculate tip at the end. It's just an annoying custom with way too much shame attached to it and at the wrong end. The shame should be entirely on the employer. Yeah, some restaurants are family owned and run, but they could just raise prices to what they should be instead of relying on tips. I've read reviews of people complaining about really bad service and then at the end of the review writing, "I left my 20% tip and never came back again". Gee, you sure showed them!

If restaurants just raised prices to cover proper wages, I'd bet we'd end up paying less overall anyway. Quite a few waiters make crazy amounts of money off tips and it's often because they're attractive or some reason other than exceptional service. Plus the idea of tip inflation is fucking moronic. Wasn't 15% considered proper for great service a while ago? Well now it's apparently 20% or even higher, I don't fucking know anymore. A percentage-based system doesn't need to be raised to account for inflation because a percentage already covers that, motherfuckers. Eating out is already expensive as is. Fuck that noise.

The tipping system will be the last thing restaurants ditch if people stop going.

To get rid of tipping, if youre not going to do it through legislation, you'd need to put the concept of reasonably priced, good food with no tip into the public psyche.

Basically, some upstart would need to start a restaurant, pay his servers a living wage, sell food at comparable quality and value to regular restaurants, and the no-tip restaurant would need to get popular enough to go viral.

Then maybe things would change.

I'd be fine with that. It's not the extra money I'm paying that I dislike, it's the arbitrary tipping custom that I dislike. We're expected to tip for below average to excellent service. Pretty much any service except for the worst, which I find rarely happens.

As far as I'm concerned, I already end up adding an extra 15% to whatever I order. I'd prefer to just get rid of the useless ritual and add that cost to my meal from the beginning. Rather than make it separate and create some type of social stigma that makes people feel and look good/bad to others because they tipped to much or too little

Doudbtful. I eat out 1 to 3 times a month, I tip maybe 1 to 3 times a year at best. I tipped because the service was phenomenal and I wanted to. Not because of no delusion you must tip.

A sucker for what? All You're doing is sticking it to people barely getting by that will get fired before restaurants will bump up wages. I am an advocate for getting rid of tipping and similar forms of wages. Not tipping isn't the way that is going to happen. I know it isn't a requirement to tip, but it there isn't a requirement for a lot of things. Bucking social norms for minor personal gain at the cost of others might not be a crime, but it might make you not a very high quality person. Thankfully, regardless of how crappy the world may seem, those type of people are always in the minority.

Guaranteed the price increase would be less than it costs to tip. Servers not getting enough in tips have to be paid the difference in minimum wage anyway, so all the extra that tips provide is gravy. Tip inflation is definitely a thing. Before you know it, 30% will be the minimum acceptable tip.
