It sounds simple, but when you have dozens of tables to tend to at once in a timely matter it is stressful. You also have to cater to guests with a smile and never show any sign of weakness.

I used to work as a coffee maker for DUNKIN. As a 16 year old, we had to serve as many as 30 people in the place and the drive through. Do I deserve 20%? Even if I fuck up? Hell no, I wouldn't even accept it. But anyways, "waiting on someone is hard".

Dozens of tables at once, bullshit. Most servers are working several tables at a time during dinner rush.

Oh no, you cater to guests with a smile? You're actually listing that as if it's challenging to pretend not to hate everyone.

*ahem* you are a SERVER. Your job is to SERVE, and wait on people as they eat. Waiters have an over blown opinion of themselves these days, because they tend to be more attractive. But you're in a service industry, it's your job to politely do what they want. Deal with it, you're over paid already.

On average, a server works harder formyour take out than when you sit down.

how is that possible

Because your take out is being done in addition to tables, not instead of. And because all your sauces and sides and whatnot have to be put on take out containers, generally by whoever is grabbing it. And it all has to be done in a shorter time frame as opposed to the normal pace of a meal.

Thats why everyone hates take out: it's harder and everyone thinks it's easier so you get tipped less.

nothing you said is at all convincing me that it's harder than actually serving

it sounds like the real issue you have with it is the lack of tips when you would rather be serving people who are going to tip

you didn't convince me it's more work in less time, though, sorry

it's not like I've never been a server, either

it's definitely about the return you get from the order in vs the order out that you're upset about, not the workload. you literally tried to say that putting condiments in a take out dish is "more work" than bringing condiments out to the table (and keeping drinks refilled etc)

also, at least where I worked/for me, I wouldn't prioritize or say that take out orders need to be done faster. if anything you're under more pressure to flip your table, unless they keep ordering drinks, in which case that's definitely more work than take out

Companies are legally allowed to pay you below minimum wage because you are expected to make more out of tipping.

If you go out to eat, you should go with the expectation of tipping. Yes, if your service sucks you should not reward that. But it is absolutely part of the expected cost of your meal.
