The average server probably makes around $20-$25 an hour with tips. That's a very good wage for a job that essentially only requires one to have good people skills.

Supposedly, they only make something like 5/Hr, which I think is either a myth or downright illegal.

That might be their base salary. The employers are legally required to make up the difference if their tips don't get them to minimum wage, so they're always guaranteed at least that. Never seen a case where their tips don't make that and the employer had to make up the difference. Because with tips they make way more than that.

Went to a beergarden with some friends about 2 weeks ago and we ended up getting a table and a server because the high tops by the bar had no place to sit.

Our bill came on one big tab and we all chipped in what we thought was a reasonable amount. (Remember, she's just serving us drinks). So as we're leaving the waitress tracks us down. I thought she was going to say we forgot something or to thank us again. Instead she says "Thanks you cheap fucks, glad you could spare some change for me!" Apparently my friend who calculated the bill and handed the cash over only left her like 10 bucks on a $100+ tab. Not a good look but whatever.

I hope you got her fired

It would be nice if more places just banned tipping, increased their prices, and payed a fair wage. The whole system is stupid. I'd rather just pay the money up front. That said, until that happens you should always tip unless service is absolute garbage.

I second this.

But really even if service is total garbage, I'm more likely to still tip and just not go back.

Servers don't want tipping banned because if it did we'd make less money. We're already guaranteed at least minimum wage, tipping allows us to make way more than that. If there was no more tipping many restaurants would probably pay around that area, so that would become our ceiling instead of our floor.

So shaming someone on social media is a punk ass move because odds are there was another customer that made your day. But you choose to go shame someone instead of posting the ticket of the giant ass tip you got from someone else

I had a friend who worked at Denny's. She regularly brought home 200-300 in tips a night. Plus a base wage of 8.75 (at the time.)

Also, if you're with friends are you each supposed to tip 20% (or whatever percent) or pull your resources and do one tip equaling 20% of total bill? In this scenario you're paying separately for your meals.

Yeah...this person doesn't wait tables

Anyway, I'd also like to deal away with the tipping system. Joe 9-5 has proven they given actual power over another person's wages, they'll abuse it to their own benefit

If you don't tip your server. You're literally stealing their labor. That's all there is to it.

In certain countries Tipping is considered an insult. I know from what I've heard is that in Japan and South Korea, they'll essentially consider it one. Due to how well they're already being paid over there.

This is what's fucked up about the system. What fucking repercussions? Threatening customers with bad service or downright fucking with your orders because they didn't TIP whatever amount someone feels is necessary is BEYOND fucked up. Tipping is supposed to be something extra for good or exceptional service, someone who is just doing their job should get 0% extra, just like everyone else on the planet doing their jobs.

Abolish that shit and don't blame consumers, blame shitty employers.

i almost exclusively go out during happy hr/restaurant week, so i tip about 25%

works itself out to a very forgettable, average tip which is what i aim for.

the idea that tipping really well will make a bartender notice who you are and 'hook you up' has always amused me. worst investment possible. i do what is expected as part of the system and punish those who fuck it up.

I used to be a cook and it drove me nuts that I came to the restaurant after they made the decision to stop splitting the tips with the kitchen staff. The restaurant was almost always busy but no matter how many dishes I pump out, the pay was always the same. When I tip, I normally tip because I enjoyed my food (and because it's expected of me), but now that I've worked in the kitchen and never got that satisfaction of hearing any compliments from customers and have to see their cleaned out plates in the dishwasher to proverbially get it, and how I'm constantly working in the heat and every time I look for servers, they're on their phone or just chatting, the whole tipping situation just sours me.

America is weird. Making $16 for serving one table is something to be snarky about?

It's almost like the 20% tip system is a load of crap. Pretty stupid how a table of 4 ordering $100 worth of food has to tip more than a table of 2 ordering $200 worth of food. Surely larger tables are more work.
