I really want a new car but I don't want to be saddled with a car payment. :( Other people get new cars all the time. We've got a secretary here driving a brand new Cadillac all because she started seeing a doctor.

Put it in the shopping cart, preferably beneath toilet paper so that they don't see it until they get to the register and then they have to buy it rather then put it back.

Of those two I'd pick the Malibu. I have an '06 that I bought a few years back with 78,000 miles on it. It now has 172,000 and it's been super reliable. All I've had to do was routine maintenance like brakes and oil changes. I did have the two front wheel bearings replaced, but that's all.

My older borther has a Sonata that's several years newer and he's had nothing but problems with it. He even had to replace the transmission

Hmm... I've heard good things about both of them. The sonata's warranty is what appealed to me. Seems to be the best one you can get on a new car.

Maybe I'll just need to give them both a test drive. Problem is the only Hyundai dealer is a few cities over. :U

I actually recommend a Tonka. One of my friend's friend's uncles kid got in an accident in one of those where it actually flipped completely over. He came out of it fine except for a bruised knee.

I do work for my money. I'm working right now! But a car is such a big expense. :/ It'd blow through ALL my savings. If there is a guy out there who would buy it for me, I think that'd be the smarter decision. That is just good business sense.

You should only be spending 10% of your gross annual income if you want to be finacially responsible, 20% is fine but pushing it. So if you make 50K, you should only spend $5K-$10K, i.e. a used, 5-10 year old econo box.

Most people don't want to hear this. Most people want to buy a new flashy sports car. Most people are in debt.

It would be somewhere around $300/month.

Here's a better idea: save up the $10K, buy a gently used older Civic outright, and save up that $300 and put it in safe investments. That $300 a month would be about $20K after five years.

No it's a common feeling, but there are two problems with it:

1) the satisfaction will fade within 3 months of the purchase, but you'll be stuck with a loan on a depreciating asset for years.

2) You'll more likely be able to purchase a new car when you're older from accumulating wealth and increasing your income.

Also, how much do you make?

Don't depend on future raises. What you should do is save up money, build a $3,000 emergency fund, and revisit the idea of buying a new or used car in a couple of years.

Benefits to buying a new car though:

- An extra 3-5 years of the best time of a car's life, and if you plan on driving it into the ground the cost/year is not that bad.

- Used cars are more popular than new cars because everybody is poor, so for just a few grand more you can buy a new car over a 2-3 year old identical one

- Longer warranty

- If you are the only owner you know exactly everything about the vehicle. You don't have to worry about some previous asshole owner that didn't change the oil or bought shitty replacement parts or beat the Hell out of the car.

I don't think buying new is bad at all, especially for cars with good reputations that retain their value like Hondas, Toyotas, and Subarus, the catch is that you gotta be able to afford the damn thing.

Well, right now I have a Toyota Yaris that is like, 15 years old. :v It was a hand me down but it still runs well. I figure I'll just keep using it and saving up, and then when it finally quits on me I'll have enough to buy a new car.

But really, I haven't had much trouble with the Yaris so far, and it is nearly at 200,000 miles. I had to get the brakes replaced a month or so ago, but other than that. Hopefully it still has some years left in it.
