Reading that retail topic and I keep seeing all these foreign terms, 'swiping' 'cash back' 'chip' 'debit or credit'. In the UK it's just tap the reader 'beep' and you're done, simple.

Is it true they swipe their card and clap if it doesn't get declined?

It's slowly becoming more and more of a thing here. Our store doesn't accept them yet, though.

I read that as USAsians at first and thought what the fuck does any of this have to do with Asian Americans specifically

We've had it for I'd hazard to guess at least a decade now but it's never really picked up anywhere.

It's super convenient, I'd struggle to think of a single store that doesn't have over here.

A lot of stuff is convenient...

I even prefer the chip and PIN method to the old swipe and sign, but we don't even get PINs here... so all this BS about how it's more secure is just that - utter BS. And then most of the stores I've been to here have switched to the hybrid card readers where you can swipe OR insert chip... and unless you're a regular there, you don't know until you try one method and they tell you have to use the other method. It's annoying as hell -_-.

Contactless payment is probably the most ingenious thing to be implemented by banks and Mastercard/Visa, and it's not because of its ease of use.

Since tapping your card always routs the transaction through Credit, banks and interchange companies will end up getting more money than if the purchaser were to select Cheque or Savings.

Soon, interbank networks like Cirrus will be phased out, forcing all card users to use Mastercard/Visa/AMEX. Merchants will ultimately end up paying more for electronic payments overall.

The advantages of contactless payment marketed to the consumer are its speed and simplicity. And sure, consumers welcome this. But most don't know they are costing the merchants more this way.

One of the primary deterrents to electronic payments is card surcharging by the merchant. In Australia, this is now regulated and restrictions to card surcharging will apply to ALL merchants starting 1st of September, 2017. So interchange companies have done well.

Is card surcharging is illegal in the states? That would make contactless payment even more inviting.
