For some reason it has never bugged me. Like if someone calls me that certain word or i'm reading comments on the internet. I just shrug my shoulders and move on as if it doesn't concern me. Something must be wrong with me. And I live in Mississippi so I get it a lot down here lol.

Not saying you'll be protesting alongside BLM but racism should concern you... it's literal hate just because of someone's race. This isn't edgy at all but it ain't normal either.

Also if you have kids in the future and have the same mindset, I'm gonna say you're failing as a parent then and there

all I'll say though is it's about context

there's things that will come to bother you if you go through them enough times. over here it's getting stopped and searched by the police aka racial profiling. or getting followed around a store as soon as you walk in. or police being suspicious of why you're driving around in a nice car.

hard to get offended at hypotheticals, and it's hard to get offended at seeing the n word on internet comments. it's a whole other thing to experience it first hand from somebody who's legit trying to undermine you or distrusts you just cause you're black

I'm 32... and it has happened. Oddly enough when I get messed over because of shallow reasons it doesn't exactly get to me. Mostly cause I just don't care. Can't change how people feel and what they do.

I always said to myself if I was born white...I still would be like this probably.

I can understand not getting upset over dumb kids and 4chan basement-dwellers trying to be edgy and use the n-word on forums, but that's not all that racism is. I hope you don't fall for white people's common excuses like "I'm not racist, I have a black friend" or "I'm not racist, I don't use the n-word". Of course very few people want to be identified as racist, so they say these things, but there is much more to racism than that.

There's this low level government employee in my neighborhood who goes to the same diner I do.

He'll usually go on rants that basically boils down to him believing that every problem facing white people is caused by black people. Basically, he's as racist as you can get. I hope someday a white person kicks his ass.

First off, dork and fatal pretty much nailed the context portion. If it's some youtube comment sure, brush it off, but if somebody said in real life "i'd rather not sit next to a nasty n*****" I'm pretty sure ANY rational person would care about that...

That's why I'm confused. If you're 32, especially down south you're gonna see it in real life no question about it. You can't change how people feel, but you should change the fact that you need to stand up for yourself. This doesn't really seem like indifference to me because the topic wouldn't exist, otherwise I'm missing the point on why someone claims they just brush off anything involving racism

I think everyone is racist, it's just part of our biology. We are a tribal small group primate. An individuals complete social circle usually only involves about 30 people that generally look, act, and believe as we do.

The trick is to be able to recognize those feelings and moderate behavior to try and be more than the resonably intelligent violent apes we are.

That second paragraph is the important part. I am fully cognizant that historically and to a large extent currently Whit people have been very bad at it. To the same degree that brown folks have a social history of being oppressed white people have a social history of being the opperssor. It affects our socialogy and world view too.

This I feel is the origin of "I'm not racist, but..." We have reached the point that we've realized we've done wrong but those feelings remain none the less. Everyone remembers racist aunt so and so telling us to roll up the windows down that street.

Social change like we are experiencing takes centuries and we've only been working on it honestly for a few decades. And only in the west. There are huge parts of the world where the idea that someone that is different than you is your equal is a completely foreign concept.

I am pretty sure if someone had the guts to actually do a scientific study on it, they would see that racism is something that is just ingrained human behavior, not something that is taught. When you get down to it, you basically spend effort teaching yourself to not be racist ever since birth but deep down it is still there.

Think about how much effort is spent to teach kids that even though someone is "different", they should still be treated the same as everyone else. When you look at it, race is just another form of "different" that people see. Hell, even animals like dogs are shown to be racist without any influence from their owners.

Overlooking that culture and race are separate matters, you'd have to be batshit insane to think that a culture which puts people to death for heresy is equal to a culture which protects those statements under free speech laws.
