I think it's got a cool story. It's not Shakespeare and I prefer ME1's optimistic tone, but imo it's the textbook example of a darker and grittier sequel done right.

If nothing else, it has the best opening in the series. The opening segment on the Normandy SR1 might even be one of the best video game openings of the seventh generation of consoles. It's damn atmospheric, and it sets the tone of the game in an instant - it's a brilliant opening regardless of how you feel about the entire product, and the perfect way to open the game after Mass Effect 1.

It's certainly flawed, they had to streamline the game in a way that made Legion almost pointless in the grand scheme of things because they were forced to split the game on 2 DVDs late in development. There's dialogue for Legion in a significant chunk of the game, including missions that he couldn't ever be recruited for, and Tali was initially going to be a romance option for FemShep - it's all been dummied out, but it's all there.

I really like ME2. Mass Effect 1 has the best story and atmosphere in my opinion (it's my favorite), and Mass Effect 3 has the best gameplay - in a way, ME2 doesn't stack up to either experience. But ME1 played like ass - as much as I enjoy it regardless - and ME3 has a fucking garbage opening level and ending system that really sours the story when everything's been said and done. ME3 is like a really expensive sandwich, top-shelf ingredients, but instead of using bread they've sandwiched the ingredients between two giant nuggets of shit. ME2 has consistency - it's a game of one-off vignettes that focuses on world-building, and imo it's really cool in that regard.

Again, not perfect. The game warrants some criticism. But even with its less than stellar moments here and there, it's arguably the most consistently decent game in the Mass Effect franchise and it does everything it wants to do in an above average way. The only severe downsides are that the final boss is mdiocre at best, and the framerate is about as ass as the rest of the series. Otherwise, it's a damn good game.

What? ME2 has always gotten more praise on here than it deserves. It single-handedly destroyed my interest in the series, which is a real shame because ME1 was by far my favorite early 360 title. I never even played ME3.

Other than the Normandy being destroyed, the opening was shit. You don't just have the main character die and be magically resurrected. There's also the issue of throwing in a new main villian (The Illusive Man), who had nothing to do with the first game, and expecting people to care.

Then there's the gameplay. People bitched about the inventory system and the Mako segments in ME1, so instead of trying to improve either one, they just removed them completely. They also stripped down the character leveling/stats to bare bones.

ME2 was pure garbage. You get 4 weapons per weapon class and three powers.

The only thing I would say it is great is making a game feel Ike an action movie

You realize that The Illusive Man isn't the villain of ME2, right?

Here is why I am not too up on the Mass Effect 2 like I use to be. The opening was horrible, it was cheap way to get your character out of the game for years. So everything could change but you. I didn't like that. Next all the stuff you did was seemingly for not . I was ok with the half-butt story thinking the Mass Effect 3 would add on to it. And they act as if that how no impact.

Mass Effect 1 was worse though when it came to filler.

1. Boring ass planet exploration in the crappy Mako.

2. Reusing the same 2 locations for every single sidequest on a non main quest planet.

i remember getting very sick of doing all the stupid loyalty missions just to survive the suicide mission, and even then i had like two people randomly die (I looked at a guide and apparently for some characters there is a % chance that they will just end up dead regardless of the choices you make).

It felt like half the game was just going through a checklist, which is not very fun for an adventure game, and i remember being bummed that the RPG aspects of ME2 were streamlined so much for the casuals who couldnt handle the already streamlined RPG elements of the first game.

IMO Mass Effect is one of the most overrated video game franchises of all time, I think it's the fact that it's a big budget Bioware game and that you get some sort of attachment to the series (since your character continued on for like 5 years) that makes people think it is better than it is

i'm talking about overall narrative significance

mass effect 2 is basically a collection of party member acquisition missions and backstory sidequests
