it's a little thing that lets you fidget. it's not something i would spend a lot of money on, but as someone with extreme anxiety i'm already finding it helpful to soothe me a little bit. the official fidget cube is well made and i think it's worth the money. some people can just click on a pen or do things like that to get the same effect. for me, investing in something purpose-built for it was worth it.

it's neat.

is the build quality good? does it feel sturdy? I've heard some bad stories about people who backed it.

the build quality is great. the only things i can think of are the "tactile gears" are pretty underwhelming, they aren't very clicky. the light switch isn't as stiff as i'd like it but it feels like really well-engineered little thing for $20

all i know is 10000% do not get a knockoff because they are way worse

I got one of these (a knockoff) a few months ago because I always play with stuff in my hands and I needed to break my terribly bad habit of picking at my fingernails/skin around my fingernails.

I like it.

Mine's a knockoff but the quality is fine.

But before that, I got one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MSAJLSG/

I thought, 12 sides is better than 6.

But the quality of it is bad, and it has, like, something loose in side of it so it makes so much noise just from holding it and moving it slightly in your hands that I couldn't actually use it in any public place.

I bought a few of the name-brand ones. One for myself and a few as gifts.

I like em. I was always finding interesting ways of flicking and pushing things for the first few days. The joystick is the best because it pulls out slightly and a magnet pulls it back in. I love sticking a finger under the side of it to pull it out and letting it click in.

Also the side with the gears and silver ball, the silver ball has the best click when you push in on it.

I go through phases where I like one side more than the others though. The spinning disc is currently what I use the most.

I hadn't seen or heard of these types of devices and then in a span of a week I noticed numerous coworkers had them and I spotted them in a couple stores. I just couldn't help but notice because it was like they just sprang up out of nowhere.

they had a massive kickstarter campaign a while back, and backers finished receiving their's like a month ago so people who bought after the fact on the official website would be receiving their's right about now.

My cousin mentioned the spinner thing of these to me last week, I had no idea wtf he was talking about.

I have now seen thousands of these things and a decent few of the cubes.

I have a different brand/model/whatever. The light switch, dial, and rotating things are all godlike. I could flip that switch for hours.

I got one for Christmas and really like it.

Some of them click a little loudly for me though which means I can't use them at work without annoying my coworkers even more than I did with clicking a pen repeatedly.

Oh, well if they're noisy then I don't think it'd really be good for me. I mostly need to keep my fingers occupied while I'm watching TV or something.

Some are noisy and some aren't. The side with five buttons includes three clicky buttons, and two silent buttons. The circle pad stick thing makes no noise. The tactile gears don't make noise. The steel ball doesn't make noise. The other spinner makes a quieter noise. The switch is loud. The worry stone makes no noise. So it has a lot of options.

Hmm, well I'm looking on Amazon and this FabQuality one is only $9 (well, $15 with shipping) and seems to have the highest rating. Weirdly mixed reviews on whether the steel ball clicks or not. Some say it does, others say it doesn't.

Don't use Amazon, use ebay. I've found that Amazon has a lot more inconsistency when a seller switches to one version of a product without specifying.

You definitely want the steel ball clicking. It's one of the best parts.

I was thinking of getting my nephew one of these, and then I bought him a rubik's cube instead. Now everyone in his class has a rubik's cube and the teacher has banned them from the classroom because they were causing such a distraction.
