Cousin finally got me into it. Just finished the Golden Claw quest in the drougr-filled temple.

It's pretty good. A bit clunky compared to what I'm used to, and it doesn't quite live up to the hype but considering how highly people speak of it then... it never really was.

It's a game that takes a little while to reach full speed. It doesn't take that long, and for open-world games it's actually on the quicker side, but it's not a cinematic campaign is what I'm saying.

To be fair, it came out 6 1/2 years ago. The landscape of video games has changed since then.

Games are... pretty much the same tbh.
Like basically all Ubisoft games are about exploring, climbing towers and finding collectibles.
There aren't really any open world action games with RPG elements like Bethesda puts out, so Skyrim is still fairly unique. Doesn't make it good but it does give you a different experience than other games that are out.

Dunno if it matters, since according to my cousin you can get good in virtually any stats by late game, but I'm playing a female Nord. I named her "Brynhilde Freyagaard". :3

You get better at whatever you do, the more you do it. Sneak to get better at sneak, cast spells to get better at spells, etc.

And the game has a great mod library that allows you to customize the game to your own personal preferences

The first and foremost reason to play a Bethesda open-world game is the sandbox: that go-anywhwere, do-anything feel. While level scaling can kill your sense of late-game progress, it does give you the ability to pick a direction, walk / climb / swim in it, dive into whatever dungeon you find, and with very few exception have the ability then and there to defeat that dungeon.

One thing to keep in mind while playing is that, despite what people may tell you, the game is neither too hard nor too easy (assuming you have it on normal difficulty or higher). But like most Beth games, it's very unbalanced. A first-time Skyrim experience without guidance will likely go as such: the first few levels will be easy as pie. By level 10, you will start running into a few bandits or draugr that will be oddly tough. By level 20, you will be pulling your hair out in frustration over these stupid-ass bandits and draugr two-shotting you to a quick death. Then by level 40 or 50 you'll be so overpowered that combat will quickly become a bore.

The reason this happens is that the game is designed to have you level way too quickly way too early; and if you don't keep your leveling focused, your skills will be scattered all over the place, and none of them will be high enough to effectively counter the sudden spike in enemy level. Here's a great little comic that illustrates this dilemma:

http://imgur.com/gallery/8M1cj3Q

To combat this, I highly recommend picking a single combat skill and focusing on it, and possibly a secondary ranged combat if you're going melee to help deal with dragons. Don't mix one-handed and two-handed, don't mix archery and destruction. Pick either heavy or light armor, don't swap between the two. Apart from restoration (which is helpful on any build and conveniently levels slowly), narrow your focus on other magic schools to one: if you want an extra friendly in the fight, go conjuration; buffs, alteration; enemy status ailments, illusion. Try to avoid leveling too much in the crafting and thief skills until you reach 30-40. This way you can keep your combat prowess evenly-matched with the enemies.

I'd quote my own post just to be similarly snarky, but it's too big. No, there's no perfect build guide, just pick a combat style and a few core skills and don't let your skill points get scattered around too much early on. In almost ever case you can tell which perks are useful and which ones are crap just by looking at them (unless they have an unseen beneficial glitch like being a vampire with Necromage).

I just don't see how you can see it never really lived up to the hype if you're just playing a 6 year old game for the first time ever.

"I just played Ocarina of Time for the first time last year and it doesn't really live up to the hype, but then it never really did"

I'm saying it doesn't live up to the hype SO FAR. That could change as I play the game.

And the "it never really was" was to indicate that the hype for it is so vast, that it's literally impossible to live up to. That it could cook my meals, pour me a cup of tea and give me a blowjob while playing, and it still couldn't live up to the hype.

But know what, fuck it. Every time I open my mouth, someone wants to start something, so fine. You win. I'm wrong and an idiot and I'll never play games again. Happy?

Huge tip with big spoilers for the Thieves Guild.

Do the entire thieves guild quest first, except for the very last quest. You'll get an unbreakable lockpick. Probably the most useful item in the game. When you do the last quest you'll lose it. So....don't do the last quest. That is always the very first thing I do when I create a new character.

This. back then exploring this massive beautiful game world that let you go pretty much anywhere physics would allow and was reasonably full of stuff to do but not so full that it lost its wilderness feel was amazing. tbh even now im not sure another game since then has done it as well

Well, in a way, kinda: you can't blame a troll for you deciding to feed it. Since they have no humanity to appeal to, the only wise option is to ignore them and go about your merry way. And it turns out that it is incredibly easy to ignore people on internet message boards.

Yeah. I did. Focus on one melee and one ranged (two-handed and magic for me, likely) and one type of armour.

But think what you want. Pretend I didn't if it makes you feel better.

I'll half-agree with your point. If you think the dungeon designs in Skyrim are bland, then you never seriously played Oblivion. However, Skyrim does have one of the worst loot systems in modern gaming. Assuming you even get a 'good' loot drop, there's nothing you can find in random loot that can't be self-replicated by having a skill of 100 in either smithing or enchanting. And the sparse hand-placed loot is mostly just basic weapon models with a mediocre enchantment tacked on. At least Oblivion had a fair amount of loot you couldn't self-replicate, like reflect-damage gear, those godly rings and necklaces, and (if you had the proper DLC) spell tomes.

If you're modding, get the Chrysamere. I prefer the one that uses a new model, not the Morrowind-style one - reminds me of one of my favorite weapons, the Defender from Final Fantasy XII (you can also get one from the Moon and Star quest mod, but I didn't like some of the world edits that mod made and decided not to keep it). Biggest draw is that you can reflect spells by blocking - knocking Sigdis Gauldurson and his clones on their asses with their own Unrelenting Forces is an 'I just pooed a little' tier of satisfaction.
