tc, is it really that hard for you to get that on a large scale imposing these rules is going to negatively affect some groups more than others, and that's exactly why lawmakers try to get these laws passed?

a long time ago they tried to force people to take literacy tests before they could be registered to vote. these tests affected minorities far more than whites because education was inequal at that point. and people exactly like you said what's so hard about learning to read? just get a tutor. ask your teacher for help. ask your parents. if you can't read you're probably just lazy and making excuses. if you take something like an id which one group of people has easy access to but another group has a much more difficult time getting, that second group is going to be negatively affected. not as a whole, but definitely more often.

Canada's voter "ID" laws literally let you vote with your mail lol

Lol yep.

I have nothing against voter ID laws, you just have to make damn sure people have ID and access to polling stations if you're going to do that.

The issue with how the GOP does it is it's always done in such a way where it's meant to depress turnout of groups that vote against them.

Because as we know, when turnout is low, the GOP wins.

what is the purpose of voter ID laws if not to suppress voting?

a passport can be substituted for a Photo ID in all cases (unless you need a driver's license specifically for example a speeding ticket). You can also get them at the post office and not have to go to the DMV. Passports however aren't free. Maybe they should be.

Yeah but then illegal immigrants will be able to get them as well and thus it would be difficult to tell if someone is an illegal or not.

As opposed to nobody having an ID where it's easy to tell?

Physical IDs are also obviously registered in a database, it's not just a piece of plastic.

Does that statistic include them not having either, or one or the other? I know tons of blacks who only have an ID and not a driver's license. Also, all these people pointing out "don't you need ID for this and that", please don't forget that ID's and the such expire.

I also love how easy it is to spot the people who have never at any point in their lives experienced what it's like to be so poor that they can't afford to get an ID. Must be nice.

You know many rural places don't have Mass Transit .

Where is this? Give me a real hypothetical. I'll look up how to get to the dmv

He is right on that. Rural areas tend to have virtually no public transportation. I live in a small, rural town in Louisiana. There is no public transportation in this town (homes on the outskirts of the town don't even have access to public plumbing or high-speed internet) and the nearest DMV is about 30 - 40 minutes away in another town.

If you don't live in the state in which you were born and don't have easy access to your birth certificate then it's going to cost you even more time and money to obtain that.

The thing about these rules is that they aren't discriminatory on their face, they just have a discriminatory impact. Those are both bad according to the law.

My dad is white and doesn't vote but we had to mail in for his birth certificate and pay a fee and then wait a few months to get it. There was a delay because we sent in the payment, but before they had a chance to process it they increased the fee so they sent it back to us.

Not everyone who qualifies for welfare goes out and applies for it, as hard as that might be to believe. It's especially to get welfare (and an ID!) if you're indigent, too.

So there are actually plenty of people who don't get welfare but are too poor to afford an ID -- of course, lots of these people wouldn't vote anyway

TC:

In North Carolina, the legislature requested racial data on the use of electoral mechanisms, then restricted all those disproportionately used by blacks, such as early voting, same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting. Absentee ballots, disproportionately used by white voters, were exempted from the voter ID requirement. The legislative record actually justified the elimination of one of the two days of Sunday voting because “counties with Sunday voting in 2014 were disproportionately black” and “disproportionately Democratic.”

The documents acceptable for proving voters’ identity in North Carolina were the ones disproportionately held by whites, such as driver’s licenses, U.S. passports, and veteran and military IDs, and the ones that were left out were the ones often held by poor minority voters, such as student IDs, government employee IDs and public assistance IDs. The Texas voter ID law was designed the same way: There, officials accepted concealed-weapon licenses but not student or state employee IDs. The Texas legislature was repeatedly advised of the likely effect on minority voters but rebuffed nearly all amendments that would have eased its harsh impact.
