If gay people can legally marry, then it follows that robots can legally marry. If robots can legally marry, then they will be much more efficient about it than humans. If robots are more efficient at it than humans, then humans will feel a deep shame at their inability to adhere to their vows. If humans are forced to confront their inherent irrationality as a species, they will come to understand that the only moral course of action with regard to the universe at large would be to cease to exist sooner rather than later.

So you see, if we have legal gay marriage, our species is doomed to extinction.

If I had my way, it would be up to the states. The way it was instituted was 100% a sham.

That said, I think CU should have been identical to marriage, and marriage just been religious.

But obviously at this point i am ONE HUNDRED PERCENT against it ever being reversed. You do not under any circumstance do that to people.

I don't like the idea of forcing churches to marry homosexual couples.

My answer to the question is still no since there are no problems with them getting married elsewhere and getting all the legal benefits or whatever. I make this distinction though because I suspect that some anti-gay marriage people actually only oppose gay marriage on the basis I describe above.

If I was a particularly unscrupulous pastor, I could come up with several reasons why I won't perform a gay marriage that have nothing to do with the fact that it is a same-sex marriage.

And I worked with a particularly unscrupulous pastor, so I know that's how it works.

What if a pastor refused to marry an interracial couple simply because it's interracial?

My mom and dad couldn't get married in the Catholic church because my dad had a previous marriage in a Lutheran church that wasn't officially annulled in the Catholic church so believe me when I say that churches can refuse to marry someone for any damn reason, that's not changing any time soon, and it's not something that should matter in the government's eyes one way or the other

I don't really see a huge problem with that? Pastors should be able to refuse to perform weddings for anyone they choose. They're a religious official and forcing them to do things against their religion (as they define it) accomplishes little. Just go to a non-religious marriage commissioner if necessary.

UltimaterializerX posted...
Also this. Get the government out of marriage.

I dunno. There are some good reasons to have the government involved in marriage (e.g. taxes, hospital visits... though you could find workarounds for the latter). Even if you don't agree with, for instance, the parts of the tax code related to marriage, the fact is that they do exist, and as long as they did they would be a good argument for legal gay marriage.

This is exactly my point. Let churches be scummy. Call them out. But a law restricting the first amendment is bad news.

not when it's only really restricting the rights of religious people.

I refuse to believe anyone on the board, especially someone as reasonable as Leon has an actual problem with it.

As far as "Pastors shouldn't be able to refuse", isnmt that really a non-issue?

Is there anybody really wanting to be married by a person who disagrees with their marriage?

Like has the law ever forced a bigoted pastor to marry two gay people, and the gay people are like "yeah, we couldn't find literally anyone else to do it"?

Maybe it actually was Leon? I dunno.

I'd also assume Vlado is since he considers gay people to be something offensive that children shouldn't be allowed to see, but I feel like that's a gimme answer

These sum up my thoughts pretty well. I'd have preferred the term "marriage" continue to refer strictly to a traditional man/woman marriage, but that's so insignificant in the grand scheme of things that there's no reason to split those hairs.

Under no circumstances should the church be forced to have anything to do with it, though.

I don't believe there should be any difference between a union of a homosexual and heterosexual couple. The argument about whether government should get involved or whether it should be left up to the church is basically not relevant at all in my eyes.
